The concept of More Than Just Pals first emerged on April 1, 2024, as a humorous idea where players could engage with “Pals”in various ways, from friendship and romance to darker activities like dismemberment and consumption. The initial joke garnered mixed reactions—while many celebrated the creativity of the gag, others were eagerly hoping for a legitimate version of the game.
Fast forward nearly a year, and on March 31, 2025, Pocketpair reiterated their commitment to this quirky dating sim. The studio has even launched a Steam page for the game, allowing enthusiasts to wishlist it. As part of its promotional efforts, Pocketpair is holding a giveaway for a body pillow featuring the beloved Pal, Lovander.

However, John Buckley, Pocketpair’s Publishing Manager, provided an intriguing remark during a lecture at GDC 2025, referring to More Than Just Pals as a “totally not real, or maybe real”project, adding fuel to the speculation.

While the existence of an extensive Steam page might appear to detract from the concept of an April Fools’ joke, Pocketpair’s presentation for More Than Just Pals mostly utilizes existing screenshots and footage previously showcased in its 2024 teaser. Their original teaser concluded with an announcement that the dating sim would launch on April 1, 2025, leaving fans curious about its veracity as the date approaches. Notably, the current version of the Steam page does not specify a release date.
In this whimsical dating adventure, players are expected to assume the role of a transfer student at the prestigious Palpagos Private Academy, engaging in various escapades. Thus far, Pocketpair has confirmed ten characters, including Pal characters like Katress, Lovander, Chillet, and several others. Additionally, players can interact with Nurse Saya and at least one Black Marketeer, as highlighted on the new Steam page. If the game comes to fruition, it suggests that Pocketpair may have had plans for this unique experience since the initial teaser.
