Original Actor Considered for Minecraft Movie’s Steve Role Before Jack Black’s Casting

In the highly anticipated A Minecraft Movie, which is inspired by the wildly popular video game, Jack Black steps into the role of Steve, an expert crafter who assists four misfit characters on their journey to escape the pixelated universe and return to the real world. Alongside Black, the film features a robust cast that includes Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers, Sebastian Hansen, and Jennifer Coolidge, peppered with numerous cameos.

Interestingly, before Jack Black was cast, another actor almost portrayed Steve. According to the latest installment of Puck’s “What I’m Hearing”newsletter by Matthew Belloni, Matt Berry was initially selected for the role. Unfortunately, due to scheduling conflicts that arose following the 2023 actors’ strike, Berry had to take on a smaller role in the film.

Known for his role as Laszlo Cravensworth in What We Do in the Shadows, Matt Berry could not fulfill the role of Steve due to these and other potential commitments, likely tied to filming obligations for the sixth season of his acclaimed show. However, Berry still contributes to A Minecraft Movie, providing the voice for Nitwit, a jobless villager who dates a character portrayed by Jennifer Coolidge, making a memorable appearance in the mid-credits scene.

Co-starring with Berry in this film is Jemaine Clement, who portrays Daryl, an auctioneer, as well as Bruce, the father of Malgosha. Berry’s cameo, though smaller than initially planned, injects humor into the film, fitting seamlessly with the ongoing gag about the voices of the Villagers. His distinct British accent creates a charming contrast to the typical sounds associated with these characters, proving his comedic timing even in a brief cameo, highlighting what could have been if he had occupied the more prominent role of Steve.

Our Perspective on Jack Black as Steve

Enhancing the Film’s Star Power

Following his success in franchise favorites like Jumanji and The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Jack Black has firmly established himself as a powerhouse in family entertainment. His casting in A Minecraft Movie elevates the film’s profile significantly. While it’s unfortunate for Berry that he had to forfeit a larger role, Black’s charisma and passion for gaming resonate well with audiences, making his portrayal of Steve both relatable and engaging.

Despite not initially being the first choice for Steve, it’s evident that Black embodies the character with enthusiasm and depth, catering to the passionate fan base of Minecraft. As a result, A Minecraft Movie has earned its place in theaters, appealing to a wide range of viewers.
