“Not Exactly A Sequel”: Exploring the Connection Between Fincher & Pitt’s Once Upon A Time In Hollywood and Tarantino’s Original Film

Recent insights from insiders unravel how the anticipated sequel to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is intertwined with Quentin Tarantino’s acclaimed film. The original 2019 movie features stars Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio, portraying a stuntman and a declining actor, respectively, navigating the evolving dynamics of the Hollywood landscape. Excitingly, it has been reported that David Fincher is set to direct this follow-up, developed by Netflix, with Tarantino contributing the screenplay. Notably, Pitt is expected to reprise his iconic role as Cliff Booth.

During an episode of The Big Picture podcast, hosts Sean Fennessey and Amanda Dobbins discussed updates about the follow-up captivated audiences at CinemaCon. Fennessey expressed optimism about the project’s direction, noting that it is progressing despite Fincher’s history of projects in development. He emphasized that this new film should be regarded more as a “follow-up” rather than a direct sequel, indicating that it is set in Cliff’s life approximately eight years post the original film’s events.

It definitely seems like this movie is happening…. Here’s what I can say. This probably should not be thought of as a sequel. This should be thought of more of a follow-up that’s connected to but not the same as — the example that was cited to me was, think about how A Big Sleep, the Raymond Chandler adaptation starring Humphrey Bogart is in the same world as Farewell, My Lovely, the 1975 Robert Mitchum movie, but it’s different actor, different directors, different time in the storyline. They are different, they are not really sequels, they are the further adventure of [Cliff].

The only other important information I have learned, that I think is confirmed, is that the movie takes place in 1977, which is roughly eight years after Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, so a different time in Cliff’s life.

If realized, this follow-up will mark Fincher’s return to filmmaking since his meticulously directed work on The Killer in 2023. Fennessey’s commentary underscores the film’s focus on Cliff’s evolution, highlighting a substantial shift from the dual narratives in Tarantino’s version. This makes it clear that what we might see is less of a sequel and more of an exploration of a new chapter in Cliff’s life.

Rumors suggest that the film could be based on a script written by Tarantino, initially conceived as his final movie but shelved last year. In 2023, Tarantino revealed the story would be positioned in 1977 California and would follow a character brimming with untold stories despite lacking fame. While he hadn’t confirmed specific actors for this project, 2024 brought news that Pitt would take on an undisclosed role.

A Hope for Realization

As of now, Pitt remains the only confirmed actor attached to this anticipated project. The nature of Fincher’s “follow-up,”anchored in the same universe yet set in a different time, allows room for the original cast to return, potentially including fan favorites like Margot Robbie, Dakota Fanning, and Austin Butler. While some characters met their demise in the original film, those who survived could very well make brief appearances.

Tarantino’s Oscar-winning creation established a rich cinematic world, interweaving memorable characters and a unique take on history. This provides ample reason to revisit the narrative through a continuation. With Fincher at the helm and Pitt reprising his beloved role, the prospect of a Once Upon a Time in Hollywood follow-up feels incredibly promising. We eagerly await its potential debut on the big screen.
