Overview of Nintendo Switch Online’s New Features for Switch 2
- Nintendo Switch Online is set to introduce a suite of exclusive features tailored for the upcoming Switch 2.
- Among the new offerings are select GameCube titles and complimentary upgrade packs for certain games on the Switch 2.
- GameChat will also be available for free to Switch 2 users until March 31, 2026.
The Nintendo Switch Online (NSO) platform is poised to enhance its service with specialized features exclusively for the Switch 2. This initiative comes as part of a promotional strategy aimed at generating excitement surrounding the new console, recently unveiled by Nintendo.
The initial showcase for Switch 2, part of a series of Nintendo Direct presentations, took place on April 2, followed by two subsequent Nintendo Treehouse: Live events on April 3 and 4. These presentations divulged vital information about the upcoming device, including game titles and features that had previously remained under wraps.
During the April 4 event, Nintendo spotlighted several exclusive functionalities of the Switch 2’s NSO, notably the inclusion of classic GameCube titles. Confirmed games earmarked for this service include iconic titles such as The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Super Mario Sunshine, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, and Luigi’s Mansion, among others. While a comprehensive list exists, not all titles are assured to launch alongside the console. However, they are expected to gradually become available before the close of 2025 through the NSO + Expansion Pack tier.
Exclusive Features of NSO for Switch 2

- GameChat (NSO)
- GameCube Games (NSO + Expansion Pack)
- Exclusive Upgrade Packs for Select Switch 2 Editions (NSO + Expansion Pack)
Owners of the Switch 2 opting for the NSO + Expansion Pack will benefit from upgrade packs for select titles designed for the Switch 2 Edition. Although the complete list of eligible games is yet to be confirmed, notable mentions include The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Metroid Prime 4 Beyond, and Pokemon Scarlet and Violet.

Another premier feature designed for the Switch 2 is GameChat, integrated with the console’s C button. This innovative system allows groups of up to 12 users to communicate while gaming, regardless of whether they are playing the same title. GameChat is not limited to voice interactions; it also permits screen sharing and operates effectively in both handheld and docked modes. Additionally, this feature incorporates built-in parental controls, adding a layer of security, although specifics on its functionality are still under review.
Distinct from the other features, GameChat will be accessible during an extended free trial period. Users will enjoy complimentary access from the Switch 2’s launch date, June 5, until March 31, 2026. After this period, a basic NSO membership—priced at $19.99 annually—will be required to maintain access to this feature.
