Episode 7 Recap: A Daring Escape Amidst a Zombie Onslaught
The action-packed seventh installment begins with Kwak Gye-young and Oh Soo-jeong confronted by a swarm of zombies that have breached the hotel through the ventilation system. They quickly regroup with troop leader Kim Young-man and Private Hwang Kyung-sik, recognizing the looming threat.
Realizing their predicament, the group attempts to find an escape route but soon encounters a dead end. In a desperate act, Hwang Kyung-sik opens fire, successfully taking down several zombies though tragedies follow, including Oh Soo-jeong being injured by a stray bullet.
Meanwhile, Jae-yoon, In-ho, and the chef maneuver through the vents where they successfully reunite with Aron. However, Jae-yoon’s growth in anxiety upon hearing gunfire leads him to insist on investigating the situation, only to be restrained by his companions due to the evident dangers.
In a climactic moment, the chef, in a panic, rushes ahead but ultimately meets a tragic fate when he is bitten by a zombie. Despite In-ho’s efforts to save him, Aron makes a heartbreaking decision, dragging the infected chef towards a deep pit and kicking him in as he begins to transform.
Back with the trapped soldiers, the group faces relentless hordes of zombies. In a clever distraction, Aron activates two walkie-talkies he took from the soldiers, which attracts the zombies. However, his inebriated state causes them to ignore him, allowing the zombies to rush past and fall into the very pit Aron created.
Simultaneously, Kang Young-joo pushes through her own harrowing encounters with zombies, battling both physical threats and psychological hallucinatory visions of Jae-yoon. Exhausted, she eventually collapses in a staircase.
In a haunting dream, she confronts the possibility of Jae-yoon being turned, facing the gut-wrenching dilemma of having to kill him. Awakening from this nightmare, she steels herself, fueled by his emotional reassurances captured in an old video where he expresses his desire for her happiness even if it means they part ways during his military service.
Revitalized, she embarks on her journey to Suseo Station, gathering necessary supplies including a kickboard, chainsaw strap, shoes, and pants before bravely making her way through the zombie-infested surroundings.
Meanwhile, the soldiers descend to a lower hotel floor, where Hwang Kyung-sik grapples with his squad’s leadership over his reckless actions that left Oh Soo-jeong injured. Challenging authority, he confronts his team, aiming his weapon until Oh Soo-jeong counteracts by aiming at him, restoring control.
Aron then reveals the location of a cargo elevator that could provide a way down. However, this precarious ascent leads them to an unexpected predicament as they discover it is suspended outside the building. Jae-yoon is chosen to bring it back up.
In a nail-biting moment, the cargo elevator malfunctions, halting right before a massive glass window with zombies banging from the other side. Jae-yoon’s desperate attempts to restore functionality culminate in a frenzied battle against zombies as the elevator teeters on the brink of disaster.
Amid the chaos, the elevator plunges through a window and crashes into a soft toy store, leaving Jae-yoon unconscious while the team barely escapes.
Concurrently, Young-joo relentlessly strides on the train tracks towards Suseo Station, only to be intercepted by suspicious men who believe she is infected. Stripped of her chainsaw and cornered, she fights back using an iron pipe, fighting for her life before making a narrow escape.
The remaining troops, believing Jae-yoon to be dead, face despair as Hwang Kyung-sik chooses to abandon the group in search of a solitary escape. However, his journey leads him directly into a mob of zombies.
Meanwhile, on a lower floor, Jae-yoon wakes up only to confront a bizarre sight: a zombie clad in a soft toy costume. Realizing its protection from harm, he cleverly executes a plan by launching the creature out of the window, leading him to don a similar costume and leap after it, calling out for Young-joo.
This gripping episode of Newtopia comes to an exhilarating close as viewers await the next installment on March 21, 2025.
