‘The 50 Best Songs of 2023’: NewJeans, NCT DOJAEJUNG, More Make NME’s List!
Many K-pop songs have been released this 2023, and among the long list of bops that fans have received, a total of five made it on NME’s list of “The 50 Best Songs of 2023,”which was dropped earlier on December 4.
To start off, the first K-pop song to be mentioned by NME was “Super Shy”by NewJeans.

The song was praised for its bouncy music, iconic choreography, and giddy feel. The song managed to claim the No. 2 position on the list.
“Equal parts confident and self-effacing, it’s the perfect encapsulation of the group’s sweet female attitude, which makes the two and a half minutes feel like the giddiest pop ride of your life,” NME shared.
Afterwards, the feature continued the list by mentioning LE SSERAFIM’s “Eve, Psyche & the Bluebeard’s wife”at No. 32.
The song belongs to LE SSERAFIM’s first full-length album “UNFORGIVEN,”and despite not being the title track, Eve managed to exceed everyone’s expectations due to its club beat and kinetic groove. For 2023, “Eve, Psyche & the Bluebeard’s wife”is one of the best K-pop dance tracks.

“Sleek and brash in equal measure, it also boasts of the best pop lyrics of the year; ‘I’m a mess/ in distress/ but we’re still the best dressed,” NME stated.
The feature also pointed out the song being inspired by the folklore of the three titular female characters, alongside being accompanied but a futuristic EDM and challenging cultural taboos.
On No. 35, NME listed “Queencard”of (G)I-DLE, which was praised for its lyrical context of self-empowerment and impactful affirmation. The song was also complimented for being a “mood-lifter.”

NME wrote, “If you dug deeper, though, you unearth a celebration of self-empowerment that celebrates other women and deliver a tongue-in-cheek and powerful new affirmation to repeat in the mirror.”
Finally, the last K-pop song to be mentioned by NME was NCT DOJAEJUNG’s debut song “Perfume,”which landed on No. 45. The song was included for its slick changeup on NCT’s discography, which contrasts the experimental takes of its sub-units.

Furthermore, “Perfume”was praised for its smooth execution, evident in its R&B roots.
“Composed of three of the group’s strongest singers, Doyoung, Jaehyun, and Jungwoo, the trio shared a tale of pure devotion over electro-tinged R&B grooves,” NME remarked.
