Upcoming Musical Celebrates the Music of James Taylor
A highly anticipated new musical, spotlighting the iconic songs of James Taylor, is currently in the early stages of development. While specific details regarding the production timeline remain undisclosed, enthusiasm within the community is palpable.
This ambitious project is being brought to life by an accomplished team of producers, including Gail Berman, Sam Feldman, Michael Gorfaine, and Broadway theater owner Jimmy Nederlander. They are collaborating with notable figures such as Frank Marshall and Jere Harris to ensure the show’s success.
Title Inspired by a Classic Hit
The show’s title is derived from Taylor’s beloved song “Fire and Rain,”which debuted in 1970 on his second album, Sweet Baby James, achieving an impressive number three on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. James Taylor, a six-time Grammy Award winner, is celebrated for timeless tracks like “You’ve Got a Friend”and “Sweet Baby James.”Notably, this musical marks the first major theatrical adaptation of his extensive catalog, although two songs from his album Flag were included in the musical Working previously.
Creative Team Behind the Production
Leading the creative direction is playwright Tracy Letts, acclaimed for his work on the Pulitzer Prize-winning play August: Osage County as well as notable adaptations like Killer Joe and Bug. Letts has also gained recognition on screen through roles in critically acclaimed films such as Lady Bird, Little Women, and The Post.
Joining him is director David Cromer, known for his innovative approaches in theater. Cromer previously directed Bug, Man from Nebraska, and the 2009 Off-Broadway revival of Our Town. His direction of the Broadway production The Band’s Visit earned him a Tony Award for Best Direction. Currently, he is at the helm of Good Night, and Good Luck, featuring George Clooney, at the renowned Winter Garden Theater.
