Kokomo City (Paramount Plus) – February 2
Making its streaming debut on Paramount Plus in February is Kokomo City, D. Smith’s award-winning breakout documentary. The film “passes the mic to four Black transgender sex workers in Atlanta and New York City – Daniella Carter, Koko Da Doll, Liyah Mitchell, and Dominique Silver – who unapologetically break down the walls of their profession. Holding nothing back, the film vibrates with energy, sex, challenge, and hard-earned wisdom.”
#Cybersleuths: The Idaho Murders (Paramount Plus) – February 6
This true crime docu-series will delve into the shocking 2022 University of Idaho killings while examining the increasing role social media plays in our lives and in legal matters. As per the synopsis: “Four college students are murdered in Idaho. A group of amateur detectives obsessed with true crime try to solve the case by examining evidence and pursuing leads.”
Raël: The Alien Prophet (Netflix) – February 7
If you’re hoping to delve into cults once more, look no further than Raël: The Alien Prophet, a Netflix docu-series on the Raëlian Movement. Starting out in France, the UFO religious sect expanded over the years, eventually making it to US Congress. This truly is a stranger than fiction tale, involving aliens, prophets and… human cloning. No, seriously.
Lover, Stalker, Killer (Netflix) – February 9
Another true crime entry from Netflix arrives in February in the form of Lover, Stalker, Killer, a gripping documentary about Dave Kroupa, whose decision to jump back into the dating pool landed him in a twisted love triangle, one that turned into a four-year nightmare. Using interviews with those involved alongside detailed reenactments, the feature depicts a “mind-bending true tale of harassment, digital deception, and murder in America’s heartland.”
The Space Race (Hulu and Disney Plus) – February 13
Making its streaming debut, National Geographic’s The Space Race is a poignant documentary telling the stories of the first Black pilots, engineers, and scientists who became astronauts in the face of social injustice. As per the synopsis: “Directors Diego Hurtado de Mendoza and Lisa Cortés profile the pioneering Black pilots, scientists, and engineers who joined NASA to serve their country in space, even as their country failed to achieve equality for them back on Earth.”
