Introduction to the Superhuman Society
A Different Kind of Hero

Similar to the main protagonist of MHA, Midoriya Izuku, Koichi is deeply inspired by heroism, particularly idolizing Pro Hero All Might. The series opens with Koichi narrating the evolution of the superhuman society, paying homage to the story of the first individual born with a Quirk, dubbed the Luminescent Baby.
While the narrative showcases conventional heroes, it also sheds light on the existence of illegal vigilantes who work outside government approval, questioning the very essence of heroism amid a society plagued by villainy. As new chaos unfolds with a villain rampaging through the city, All Might steps in to effortlessly defeat the threat, contrasting Koichi’s day-to-day existence filled with societal challenges.
The Three Heroes

However, Koichi soon finds himself in a predicament with a trio of delinquents, who confront him about a collision. This encounter introduces us to his Quirk, Slide and Glide — a slower but unique ability that allows him to maneuver along surfaces. Despite its limitations, Koichi utilizes this power to evade his pursuers, facing mockery as his Quirk is likened to that of a cockroach.
As dusk falls, we are introduced to Pop Step, who captivates her audience with a performance, contrasting Koichi’s feelings of inadequacy regarding his own abilities. As Koichi observes her talent, he wishes he had a more impressive Quirk. Their paths cross again when, at Koichi’s workplace, the delinquents return, reminding him of his earlier encounter and leading to more trouble.
Embracing Heroism
Koichi’s First Heroic Act

After a tough day and frustrations about police inadequacies, Koichi returns home to don a makeshift hero costume, ready to embrace his identity as a vigilante. His actions, though illegal, highlight the failings of the hero society and how it often leaves citizens unprotected.
In his quest for heroism, Koichi assists civilians, retrieves lost items, and helps with directions, all while drawing more substantial connections to events from MHA. It becomes clear that despite the illegal nature of his actions, the joy he finds in helping others is utmost.
During one of his outings, Koichi unexpectedly encounters Pop Step, marking a significant moment in their relationship. Clad in attire inspired by All Might, Koichi seeks to emulate his hero. However, their first meeting turns perilous when they cross paths with the delinquents once again, culminating in a confrontation that requires outside intervention.
The Path to Heroism

In the aftermath of the confrontation, Koichi attempts to slip away, wanting to avoid further conflicts. This is when Knuckleduster makes an enticing offer to recruit him, promising to channel his potential as a hero. Despite Koichi’s reluctance, he cannot deny the longing within himself to help others, a sentiment that aligns him with true hero ideals.
Though hesitant at first, his instincts kick in when he sees Pop Step in jeopardy, showcasing the hero within him. His previous doubts about his abilities hinder his growth, revealing a multifaceted character battling with self-perception and ambition.
A new mysterious element introduces itself as the trio learns of a drug called Trigger that boosts Quirks while diminishing rationality, culminating in a moral dilemma for heroes and civilians alike. This element emphasizes critical flaws in the current hero landscape as power-hungry individuals threaten societal safety.
Koichi gradually involves himself with Knuckleduster and Pop Step as they investigate the origins of Trigger. Their alliance showcases a blend of traditional hero narratives mixed with raw, unfiltered authenticity as they navigate dangers and personal challenges. The series paints a dynamic portrait of what it truly means to be a hero, straying from conventional paths.
Just like MHA, Vigilantes creates a harmonious blend of humor, action, and character development, presenting a fresh take on the superhero genre, observing its protagonists grow in a flawed society.
The series is now available for streaming on Crunchyroll.
