Monument Records to Close Its Doors Amid Industry Changes

In a significant development for the country music scene, Sony Music has confirmed the closure of Monument Records, home to notable artists like Walker Hayes, Brandon Ratliff, and Tigirlily Gold, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

Transition for Tigirlily Gold

While Tigirlily Gold is set to transition to Sony Music Nashville, the future of other Monument artists remains uncertain. The majority of the label’s team will depart, and Sony Music Nashville will oversee the remaining operations of Monument.

Jason Owen: A Key Player in Monument’s Legacy

Jason Owen, a prominent figure in the country music industry, played a pivotal role in the revival of Monument Records eight years ago alongside producer Shane McAnally. According to a report by The Tennessean, Owen, who manages stars like Kacey Musgraves and Kelsea Ballerini through his company Sandbox, is also set to take on the management of hit-makers Billie Eilish and Finneas.

Changes in Leadership

Katie McCartney, who has been serving as Monument’s general manager since 2020, is departing for an undisclosed opportunity. Before her tenure at Monument, McCartney held various positions at both UMG Nashville and Sony Music Nashville.

A Look Back at Monument’s Rich History

The news of Monument’s closure was first reported by Country Aircheck. Founded in 1958, Monument Records was the legendary label behind Roy Orbison’s classic hits such as “In Dreams”and “Oh, Pretty Woman.”Over the years, it has also housed iconic talents like Kris Kristofferson and Dolly Parton.

Recent Successes and Challenges

Since its revival, Monument’s notable achievement includes the massive success of Walker Hayes’ hit “Fancy Like,”which became a cultural phenomenon, particularly after being featured in commercials by restaurant chain Applebee’s. This track has since earned six times platinum certification, marking it as one of the label’s standout accomplishments in recent years.

As Monument Records closes this chapter, it highlights both the challenges faced by modern labels in navigating the evolving music landscape and the ongoing influence of its legacy in country music.
