Minecraft Movie Achieves Major Box Office Milestone Within First Week of Theatrical Release

A Minecraft Movie has made a significant impact on the current box office charts. This film follows a diverse group of characters—including Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers, and Sebastian Hansen—who unwittingly traverse a portal into Mojang’s renowned realm, the Overworld. They receive guidance from the beloved local character, Steve, portrayed by Jack Black. Directed by Jared Hess, famous for his works such as Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre, the film features a screenplay crafted by Chris Bowman, Hubbel Palmer, Neil Widener, Gavin James, and Chris Galletta.

With an impressive production budget of $150 million—exclusive of marketing costs—A Minecraft Movie must secure approximately $375 million at the box office merely to break even. Complicating the movie’s prospects were preliminary reviews, which were mixed to negative, leading to a mere 48% score on Rotten Tomatoes. This decline in audience enthusiasm for video game adaptations is further evidenced by the underwhelming box office performance of other recent titles, such as the 2024 film Borderlands, which grossed only $33 million against its $120 million budget.

A Minecraft Movie: Among the Highest-Grossing Video Game Films

Box Office Explosion in Less Than a Week

As of now, A Minecraft Movie has taken the box office by storm. Before its release, it had already set a record for the highest ticket pre-sales for a PG-rated film in 2025. Upon its opening weekend, the film achieved an astonishing domestic gross of $162.7 million, marking the best debut of the year and making it the highest-grossing opening weekend for any video game film in history, surpassing the 2023 blockbuster The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which previously held the record at $146.4 million.

To put this into perspective, the second-best domestic debut for the year belongs to Captain America: Brave New World, which garnered $88.8 million.

According to The Numbers, as of April 8, A Minecraft Movie has amassed a worldwide gross of $323.38 million. This impressive figure has allowed it to surpass Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (2016), which earned $314.1 million, making it the tenth highest-grossing video game film of all time—and all this in under a week since its theatrical release. It has also overtaken other notable video game adaptations such as Battleship ($313.5 million) and Sonic the Hedgehog ($302.5 million).

As it stands, the nine video game films that currently outpace A Minecraft Movie in box office rankings range from Prince of Persia: Sands of Time (2010), with $336.4 million at No. 9, to the reigning champion The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023), which grossed an astounding $1.359 billion. With just a $13 million gap between this film and Prince of Persia, it’s highly probable that it will soon surpass that title. Given its current momentum, it may be only a matter of time before it claims the top spot, especially considering its record-breaking opening performance against Super Mario.
