Mojang Studios has announced an exciting new feature that will revolutionize how players can fly in Minecraft. Set for release in the upcoming update, this feature is linked to the introduction of a new variant called the happy ghast. Currently, flying in Minecraft is primarily achieved through the elytra, making this enhancement particularly noteworthy.
Here’s a comprehensive overview of the innovative flying mechanics coming to Minecraft, including detailed insights into the happy ghast and the functionality of the new harness.
Introducing a New Flying Mechanic: The Happy Ghast and Harness

The happy ghast is an upcoming variant that was revealed during Minecraft Live 2025, set to be included in the next game update later this summer. Distinct from the usual hostile Nether ghasts, the happy ghast provides a friendly flying option for players to explore the vast world of Minecraft.
To summon a happy ghast, players must first obtain a dried ghast block, which can then be transformed into a ghastling by submerging it in water. After this, players will need to use snowballs to nurture the ghastling into a full-grown happy ghast.
The happy ghast is characterized by its serene demeanor, featuring a gentle smile and an overall passive interaction towards players. This sweetness allows players the opportunity to fly by utilizing a new item known as the harness.
Crafting the harness involves combining three leather pieces, two glass blocks, and one wool block, effectively creating a saddle specifically designed for the happy ghast. Once equipped, players can ride the happy ghast simply by right-clicking on it, unlocking the ability to soar through the sky.
Players will have the capability to control their altitude, as well as manage forward and backward movement and direction during flight.

Minecraft, with its legacy spanning over 15 years, has traditionally required players to defeat the Ender Dragon to obtain an elytra for flight. However, the new flying method with the happy ghast removes this barrier, allowing players to take to the skies without completing the game’s major objectives.
Additionally, it’s important to note that the ghast harness can hover mid-air, accommodating up to four players at once, which opens up exciting possibilities for team exploration.
