Warning: Major spoilers for the season 2 finale of 1923 are included in this article!
Sobering Reflections on Jack Dutton’s Death
In the gripping conclusion of 1923, star Michelle Randolph weighs in on the emotional repercussions of Jack Dutton’s (portrayed by Darren Mann) tragic demise, alongside Liz’s response to the harrowing event. As the latest chapter in the prolific Yellowstone franchise—and a follow-up to the acclaimed 1883—the series features the formidable duo of Jacob and Cara Dutton, brought to life by iconic actors Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren. The season 2 finale, which aired recently, not only caps off a tumultuous narrative arc but also sees the loss of multiple characters, including Jack, Jacob’s great-nephew.
In an enlightening conversation with ScreenRant, Randolph, who embodies the heartbroken Liz, discusses the profound impact of Jack’s death on her character’s psyche. She expresses that Liz is “devastated,”facing yet another significant loss in a series filled with emotional trials. Despite this tragic turn, Randolph is optimistic about the character’s potential for growth and new beginnings. Here’s what she had to say:
I think she’s devastated. She lost a part of herself. She sacrificed her whole life to be with this man, who sometimes acts like a boy, who dies. And I think part of her heartbreak is that he chose to leave, and it was his immaturity of wanting to go be a part of the fight when really his priority should have been her. Maybe he’d still be alive had he not gone.
But I also understand the loyalty he has for his family, and how important that is, and that is what would ultimately protect Elizabeth at the end of the day. Basically, that’s a whole lot of words to say, “I don’t know.”I processed that with you.
And there are so many places that could go. I think it’s devastating for Elizabeth to leave and abandon Cara, and to go to a place where no one understands what she just went through. And now, she has to try to start over with this baby. I just think there are so many possibilities for a story to be told.
Implications for 1923’s Future
Will Liz’s Journey Continue?

The season 2 finale saw the demise of Jack and others, including Donald Whitfield (Timothy Dalton) and his hired guns, marking a climactic resolution to a significant conflict. This chapter may be over, but it sets the stage for the ongoing struggle over the Dutton’s land, as hinted by Whitfield being “just the first”of many affluent adversaries. Although the finale does not come with a definitive declaration of series closure, its structure suggests a deliberate two-season narrative arc, casting doubt on the prospect of a season 3.
Nevertheless, as Randolph highlights, there remains a rich narrative potential for Liz’s character. With a new prequel titled 1944 on the horizon—exploring the life of John Dutton II—it’s possible that characters like Spencer Dutton (played by Brandon Sklenar) will reemerge, allowing for potential ties to Liz’s storyline. Sklenar himself addressed this possibility in a recent interview with Variety, mentioning his interest in reprising his role.
Analyzing Liz’s Fate in the Season 2 Finale
Should Liz Make a Return?

Following Jack’s burial, Liz embarks on a new chapter away from Montana, accompanied by her child. While the finale’s open-ended nature allows for further exploration of Liz’s journey, it could also represent a poignant conclusion to her arc, with her future remaining uncertain. The prospect of Liz leaving Montana could indicate that her return is unlikely, as the series has predominantly focused on the intricate dynamics within Paradise Valley.
Given Spencer Dutton’s likely involvement in 1944, given his lineage as John Dutton II’s father, Liz may find her path diverging from this narrative current.
Despite the potential divisiveness surrounding the season 2 finale, it successfully wraps up key narrative arcs while setting the stage for upcoming stories in a new era. While questions linger regarding whether the season 2 finale serves as the series finale, Randolph expresses hope that Liz might yet have a future in the expansive Yellowstone universe.
