‘Locked’ Film Review: Bill Skarsgård and Anthony Hopkins Elevate This High-Concept Thriller

Beware of the Trapped SUV: A Darkly Humorous Thriller Awaits

Attention, potential car thieves. If you find yourself locked inside a luxury SUV after a failed heist, resist the temptation to answer the ringing car phone. The alternative? Missing out on the unsettlingly charming voice of Anthony Hopkins, delivering his signature villainous flair.

In the latest high-concept thriller, *Locked*, we follow Eddie Barrish, a desperate criminal portrayed by Bill Skarsgard. In a surprising twist of fate, Eddie, known for his sinister roles as Pennywise and Count Orlok, becomes the target of sinister circumstances in this film.

Remake with a Twist

*Locked* is the American adaptation of *4×4*, a 2019 Argentinean thriller that captured audience interest during various film festivals. The premise, reminiscent of an idea dreamed up during a late-night brainstorming session, revolves around Eddie, a thief who attempts to rob a vehicle only to discover it transforms into a merciless trap. This SUV is anything but ordinary; it operates as a fortified torture chamber, with all systems functioning perfectly—definitely not a Tesla.

The Nightmare Within the Vehicle

Inside this high-tech prison, Eddie realizes he is ensnared. The doors and windows are sealed tightly, the interior soundproofed, and the tinted glass leaves him unseen even as concerned bystanders pass by. Attempting to escape, Eddie learns the vehicle is also bulletproof—an unfortunate discovery when his gunfire rebounds and injures him.

A Peculiar Caller from South Wales

When the phone buzzes with the message “Answer Me,” Eddie, understandably frazzled, initially hesitates. However, the call from a suave voice turns out to be much more than expected. The caller, identifying himself as William, expresses his frustration after numerous vehicle break-ins without any arrests.

What follows is a chaotic interaction where William uses various methods of torment, including electric shocks, extreme temperature control, and even blasting polka music featuring yodeling, all designed to put Eddie through the wringer.

Philosophical Conversations Amidst Torture

The absurdity escalates as Eddie attempts to connect on a philosophical level, referencing *Crime and Punishment*. In a bizarre twist, his compliance results in rewards from the glove compartment, while disobedience leads to wild, harrowing rides orchestrated by William. Throughout it all, William’s incessant use of the term “old sport” adds an ironic twist reminiscent of *The Great Gatsby*.

While the dialogue may come off as contrived, director David Yarovesky skillfully navigates this quirky yet engaging premise, keeping the audience invested during its brisk runtime. Skarsgard’s committed performance, juxtaposed against Hopkins’ masterful voice work, creates a unique interplay of physical and psychological torment. Although we eventually see William on screen, it seems Hopkins enjoyed the subtlety of lending his talent to this chilling character primarily over the phone.

This edgy film not only entertains but also prompts viewers to reflect on the dynamics of power and morality, all while providing a thrilling cinematic experience.
