Live-Action Sequel to ‘How To Train Your Dragon 2’ Slated for Summer 2027 Release

Universal Announces Release Date for Live-Action How to Train Your Dragon 2

Universal Pictures is diving into its highly anticipated remake of How to Train Your Dragon 2, following the success of the original animated series. During its recent presentation at CinemaCon, the studio revealed that the live-action sequel is scheduled for a theatrical release on June 11, 2027, just days after the release of the first live-action adaptation of the beloved 2010 animated film, which will premiere on June 13, 2027.

Returning Talent

Franchise veteran Dean DeBlois is back at the helm as the writer and director for this upcoming sequel. DeBlois has been integral to the franchise since its inception, co-directing the original How to Train Your Dragon alongside Chris Sanders. In this sequel, familiar voices will return, including Mason Thames as Hiccup and Nico Parker as Astrid. The trio, including Gerard Butler, took the stage to share exciting updates about the project.

CinemaCon Sneak Peek

Universal has shown strong enthusiasm for the live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon. During CinemaCon, attendees were treated to a special screening of the full film, which chronicles the heartwarming relationship between Hiccup and his dragon companion, Toothless.

A Look Back at the Original

The animated version of How to Train Your Dragon 2, released in 2014, boasted an impressive voice cast featuring Jay Baruchel, Cate Blanchett, Gerard Butler, and America Ferrera. This Oscar-nominated film follows the adventures of Hiccup and Toothless as they unearth a conspiracy to create an army of dragons.

Insights from Dean DeBlois

In a previous press event for the live-action adaptation, reported by The Hollywood Reporter, DeBlois reflected on the journey of the original film. He noted that due to the tight production schedule and limited resources on the first project, certain character developments and relationship dynamics had to be streamlined. “There were elements we might have been able to explore more, such as depth in character relationships and immersive action,” he mentioned. He believes that this new reimagining not only maintains fidelity to the original story but also enriches the narrative with deeper character exploration and added mythology.

Inspired by Cressida Cowell

The How to Train Your Dragon franchise drew its inspiration from the book series by Cressida Cowell. Alongside DeBlois, the live-action film is being produced by Marc Platt and Adam Siegel, ensuring a collaborative effort to bring this beloved tale to life in a new format.
