The initial teaser trailer for Lilo & Stitch showcased the mischievous blue alien, Stitch, creating quite the ruckus at the beach. The original story follows a young Hawaiian girl named Lilo, who adopts what she believes to be a dog, only to discover it is a genetically engineered alien with a chaotic agenda.
Dean Fleischer Camp leads the project, working from a screenplay by Chris Kekaniokalani Bright, drawing inspiration from the original film co-directed by Sanders and Dean DeBlois. Producers for this remake include Jonathan Eirich and Dan Lin.
In a previous interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Chris Sanders hinted at his involvement in the new film as the voice of Stitch. “I have been able to see a few things, and I can’t tell you what I’ve seen,”he shared, expressing his enthusiasm about the project. “But they allowed me to see some peeks of what they wrote, too, and it’s really cool.”
Camp is also known for directing the critically acclaimed A24 film Marcel the Shell With Shoes On, which earned an Oscar nomination in 2021. This trend of live-action remakes highlights Disney’s commitment to reimagining its cherished characters for a modern audience.
In broader context, Disney’s strategy continues to pay off, evident from the success of director Barry Jenkins‘ prequel film Mufasa: The Lion King, which grossed over $700 million at the global box office since its release in December.
Stay tuned for further updates as Disney gears up for the release of this exciting new adaptation, which promises to bring a fresh perspective to a classic tale.
