[This article contains spoilers from season 22, episode 13 of Grey’s Anatomy, titled “Don’t You (Forget About Me.” ]
After 192 captivating episodes as Teddy Altman on *Grey’s Anatomy*, Kim Raver continues to embrace the challenges brought forth by the show’s writers, breathing fresh life into her role.
In the latest season, Teddy, now the chief of surgery at Grey Sloan Memorial, faces unprecedented pressure, particularly within her tumultuous marriage to fellow trauma surgeon Owen Hunt, portrayed by Kevin McKidd. The episode “Don’t You (Forget About Me),” aired Thursday, takes their relationship into complex, uncharted waters. The couple decides to test the waters of an open marriage in hopes of salvaging their bond.
As new romantic potentials emerge, Teddy grapples with longstanding tension toward Dr. Cass Beckman, played by guest star Sophia Bush, and initiates a brief connection during a medical conference. However, she soon withdraws, realizing that a physical encounter will not remedy her marital woes. Unbeknownst to Teddy, Owen has already engaged in his own fling, resulting in a revealing post-coital moment with his childhood friend, Nora (Floriana Lima).
Raver shared her thoughts with *The Hollywood Reporter*, saying, “It’s fascinating to see these two characters [Teddy and Owen] striving to navigate their profound love for one another. However, the match is lit. I wanted this episode to end as a quintessential *Grey’s* moment, where viewers are passionately engaged in after-show discussions.”
In the conversation that follows, Raver elaborates on Teddy’s evolving narrative arc, the experimentation of open marriage, and her continued enthusiasm for portraying the multi-faceted surgeon on *Grey’s Anatomy*.
Teddy’s storyline this season is quite extensive. After 192 episodes, what keeps you motivated, especially with this narrative twist?
“I feel incredibly fortunate to be part of a show that is so well-established,”Raver expressed. Many of my peers are in shows that have seasons lasting seven or eight episodes, so being involved in 18 to 24 episodes per season is an exceptional opportunity. Directing, thanks to the creative environment fostered by Shonda Rhimes, adds another layer to my experience. I truly appreciate the showrunners who have encouraged this growth, including John Wells, who was pivotal at the start of my career on *Third Watch*,” Raver noted.
“What excites me most is Teddy’s journey through challenging and intricate scenarios, reflecting Shonda’s talent for crafting multidimensional characters—especially within the female cast. They are not just skilled surgeons; they lead deeply complex lives, allowing us to explore moments that encapsulate both valor and vulnerability. Teddy’s choices often lead to regret, but also growth, contributing to the human experience that fans resonate with.”
The open marriage theme exemplifies that complexity, doesn’t it?
*Grey’s Anatomy* has a long history of tackling controversial topics, including the varied opinions surrounding open marriage. The dialogue sparked by Teddy and Owen’s choices showcases that there’s no singular ‘right’ approach; rather, it’s about personal preferences and what resonates with each individual.
“The storyline was approached with caution, yet we aimed to explore it meaningfully,” Raver explained. “Showrunner Meg Marinis has been outstanding in collaborating with Kevin and me, as we prioritized the integrity of our characters and the relationship we’ve built over the years. It only becomes more intricate as we reach the season finale.”
With *Grey’s Anatomy* pioneering boundary-pushing narratives, how did you approach this episode’s unique premise, especially as it pertains to Teddy’s history?
“Fans are highly invested and tend to have passionate reactions, which makes their engagement so special,” Raver commented. “Shonda’s willingness to take bold risks instills a trust in us to explore discomfort, which can yield compelling drama. We frequently brainstorm in Joe’s bar set, openly discussing our concerns and potential aspirations for the plot.
“I felt strongly about portraying the open marriage as a consensual and mutual decision between Teddy and Owen, emphasizing Teddy’s growth from past mistakes, particularly her affair with Tom Koracick,”Raver elaborated. “The decision for the couple to stay together amid turmoil speaks volumes about their love, despite conflicting challenges.”
What perspectives might we gather from Teddy and Owen’s decisions, given that they may choose paths that don’t necessarily lead to resolution?
Teddy’s realization that “an open marriage isn’t going to fix my marriage”highlights the complexities of their situation. I envisioned the episode’s conclusion encapsulating that classic *Grey’s* element, prompting viewers to deliberate and engage in spirited debates about the narrative twists they just witnessed.

Given the chemistry between you and Sophia Bush, what was the collaborative process like during the crafting of their near intimacy?
“We engaged an intimacy coordinator to ensure that the scene was thoroughly mapped out and based on mutual consent, crucial for my dual role as both actor and director,” Raver explained. “Working with Sophia has been a delightful experience. Her professionalism and collaborative spirit really shine through. It emphasizes the importance of women supporting each other in this industry, particularly in a directorial capacity.”
“I approached the scene as if choreographing a dance, learning from my mentor Debbie Allen. Every moment was communicated clearly, ensuring Sophia and I felt completely comfortable with the unfolding narrative.”
As the season progresses, could this signify the end of Teddy and Cass’s storyline?
“It’s still uncertain, so fans should stay tuned! The beauty of *Grey’s* is in its evolution, keeping audiences eagerly wondering how relationships will unravel.”
Ellen Pompeo has hinted at her potential return, suggesting *Grey’s* may continue indefinitely. Do you share that sentiment, and would you remain on board for the ride?
“I’m committed for the long haul,”Raver remarked. “Having the chance to tell Teddy’s story over time, combined with the opportunity to direct, is a remarkable privilege. Mentoring young women in the industry is equally essential. *Shondaland* has been instrumental in fostering diverse talent throughout its existence.”
“I cherish every moment spent in telling Teddy’s stories; the crew’s dedication and expertise enhance every narrative. Meg’s leadership as a showrunner ensures the writing continuously evolves, which keeps the series fresh and engaging.”
With such a vast history, do you believe characters like Cristina Yang could return?
“I adore Sandra Oh, and the idea of seeing characters from the past return feels reminiscent of a university setting—where alumni can come back into the fold. Their influences and storylines continue to be integral to *Grey’s* and resonate deeply with fans.”
Will you direct more episodes this season?
“At the moment, I won’t direct any further this season, but I look forward to future opportunities. With 18 episodes this season, we’ve wrapped up shooting for the finale, which promises to be an exhilarating experience.”
As we approach the finale, should fans be concerned about Teddy’s fate, considering the series’ tradition of cliffhangers?
“Fans will likely feel anxious about everyone involved, but that’s the essence of *Grey’s*!” Raver teased.
New episodes of *Grey’s Anatomy* premiere Thursdays at 10 p.m. on ABC and are available for streaming on Hulu the following day.
