Kid Capri Reveals His Voice Was Sampled Without Permission for Martin’s Theme Song – Who Composed the Iconic Sitcom Tune?

Kid Capri Claims Unauthorized Use of His Voice in ‘Martin’ Theme Song

In a recent episode of the Bag Fuel podcast aired on April 1, 2025, renowned American DJ and rapper Kid Capri made explosive claims regarding his alleged vocal contribution to the iconic theme song of the popular Fox sitcom Martin. Capri asserted that his voice was sampled without his awareness or approval.

The Origin of the Theme Song

As reported by Billboard on April 2, 2025, the theme song for Martin was composed by Steve Keitt. Capri revealed that the sample was reportedly lifted from his performance in the 1992 HBO stand-up series Def Comedy Jam. Notably, he indicated that despite the passage of over 30 years, he remained silent about this issue, emphasizing that it was never about financial gain for him.

“They took my voice from Def Comedy Jam, sampled it, put it on the Martin show. Never got no permission from me, never asked for my rights, nothing. This show been on eight different networks for 30 years. Now, if it was a money thing for me, I would have been like, ‘Yo, where’s my bread?’ I ain’t never did that,”said Capri.

Capri’s decision to speak out was reportedly triggered by the response from Martin Lawrence, the creator and star of the show, alongside actress Tisha Campbell, who allegedly denied Capri’s claims. Capri described their dismissal as “the dumbest sh*t,”asserting that many people recognized his voice in the theme.

“First of all, that was the dumbest sh*t to say, everybody know it’s me number one. Number two, I got videos of this. Number three, all you had to say was, ‘Yo Kid, we used your sh*t, is it aight? Here’s a bag.’ Or not,”Capri remarked.

In another recent development, Kid Capri expressed his support for DJ Gillie Da Kid, who made headlines on June 29, 2024, after posting a provocative reel on Instagram. In the video, Gillie criticized women who label themselves as “bad b*tches”while lacking tangible achievements, arguing that self-worth should exceed superficial appearances.

“I’m tired of this sh*t ‘I’m a bad b*tch, bad b*tch.’ B*tch, your credit score is 300. Shut the f*ck up… How you a bad b*tch if you got nothing going on? Nothing, you just look good. What?”Gillie stated.

The following day, Capri echoed Gillie’s sentiments, describing women who prioritize looks over personal growth as “narcissistic.”He urged them to showcase their contributions in business, parenting, and home management.

“Being sexy is one thing; overdoing it is another. No hate at all, and I really don’t care if you don’t agree, but @gilliedaking said he’s tired of women calling themselves bad b*tches, and I agree… Sh*ts corny! And if that’s the only thing you got going for you, then you could never handle a man like me; women can be sexy and have fun, but people gotta get their minds right. I said what I said. #kidcapri”
