Kaliko Kauahi Explains Val’s Comedic Medical Feud in St. Denis

NBC’s hit sitcom, St. Denis Medical, lights up Tuesday nights at 8 p.m. ET, with subsequent episodes ready for streaming on Peacock the following day. As the series approaches its finale, viewers can rejoice knowing that NBC has renewed it for a second season. Garnering an impressive 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the comedic offering from Eric Ledgin and Justin Spitzer has quickly captured the hearts of its audience.

Set within the bustling environment of a modest hospital, St. Denis Medical portrays an endearing ensemble of committed doctors, nurses, and staff striving to transform their underfunded facility into a renowned medical hub. The series features Kaliko Kauahi as Val, a hilariously frank nurse administrator. Kauahi, familiar to many from her portrayal of Sandra in Superstore, has also appeared in popular series like American Auto and Raven’s Home.

In an insightful interview with ScreenRant, Kauahi discusses various aspects of her character’s journey, upcoming plot developments, and potential guest stars for the show’s second season.

Kauahi Anticipates a Dive into the Characters’ Personal Lives in Season 2

“We’ve only glimpsed Val, with hints of her life outside the hospital.”

ScreenRant: Congratulations on the renewal for season 2! What was your reaction to the news?

Kaliko Kauahi: I was elated, not just for myself but for the entire cast and crew. They put in tremendous effort, and they’ve crafted something truly special. I can’t wait for season 2!

Are there specific storylines regarding Val that you hope to see explored further in season 2?

Kaliko Kauahi: I trust the writers to further develop Val. We’ve only seen part of her character and received glimpses of her life outside work. I believe it would be entertaining to delve more into the personal lives of all the characters.

“Listen to Your Ladybug”was a standout episode, combining humor with a meaningful message. What stood out to you in that episode?

Kaliko Kauahi: The creative team excels at finding balance. They seamlessly blend humor with heartfelt, relatable moments. They’ve mastered the art of weaving all these elements together in a single episode.

Bruce Remains Hurt Over Not Being on Val’s List

Val will never add him to the list; I don’t think so, just because.

One engaging subplot this season involved Val’s decision not to place Bruce on her list. Do you think he still bears a grudge over that?

Kaliko Kauahi: Bruce has a hard time moving past anything. At the core, he’s still upset that Val didn’t include him. I genuinely believe Val will never consider him for the list.

Bruce seems to have developed an increased interest in Val after realizing he wasn’t included.

Kaliko Kauahi: Their dynamic is an ongoing battle. They continuously vie for dominance in their interactions.

Val’s indifference toward Bruce’s antics is amusing. I’d love to see more of that dynamic.

Kaliko Kauahi: I find that exchange hilarious! Josh is fantastic as Bruce, and it’s entertaining to watch Val remain unfazed by his character.

Potential Returns of Superstore Alumni in Season 2

“I believe their participation could enhance the show immensely!”

Val’s relationship with Matt is entertaining. How does she perceive his excessively energetic personality?

Kaliko Kauahi: It’s quite amusing that they keep pairing these two. Val likely wishes to avoid extra time with Matt, but he consistently seeks her out during breaks. It’s like he’s oblivious to her disinterest.

It seems Matt sees them as best friends.

Kaliko Kauahi: Precisely! To Matt, their relationship is almost mentorship, but Val isn’t the least bit invested in it.

Can you share any teasers about the upcoming season finale?

Kaliko Kauahi: All I can say is brace yourselves; it’s going to be an exciting ride! This season has been a blast, and while every episode stands on its own, significant developments will unfold. It’s going to be fantastic!

This season featured remarkable guest stars. Are there any past collaborators you’d love to see return for season 2?

Kaliko Kauahi: We were incredibly fortunate with our guest stars in season one! I’d be thrilled to see any members from the Superstore crew drop by; they would fit right in and add to the fun!
