Joseph Quinn Talks About the New Take on Johnny Storm in Marvel’s Latest Adaptation
In the upcoming film The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Joseph Quinn, who portrays the Human Torch, sheds light on his character’s reimagined personality. He emphasizes how his representation diverges from the traditional playboy persona associated with Johnny Storm in comic books.
A Fresh Perspective on Johnny Storm
During a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, the cast of The Fantastic Four: First Steps shared their insights on Marvel’s renowned superhero team, known as the First Family. Quinn highlighted that his version of Johnny Storm is not the typical “womanizing, devil-may-care” individual often depicted in previous adaptations.
A Thoughtful Approach to Characterization
Quinn notes that his iteration of Johnny Storm demonstrates greater emotional intelligence. He describes the character as “less callous with other people’s feelings” and introduces an element of self-awareness regarding his behavior. Quinn states:
“He’s a man that leads with a lot of bravado, which can be an affront sometimes. But also he’s funny. Myself and [Marvel Studios boss] Kevin [Feige] were speaking about previous iterations of him and where we are culturally. He was branded as this womanizing, devil-may-care guy, but is that sexy these days? I don’t think so. This version of Johnny is less callous with other people’s feelings, and hopefully there’s a self-awareness about what’s driving that attention-seeking behavior.”
Emphasizing Humor and Bravado
Despite the shift in character depth, Quinn assures fans that his portrayal still retains the humor and bravado that define Johnny Storm. This change could resonate better with modern audiences who value emotional awareness and growth in their superheroes.
