How to Join the Dark Brotherhood in Oblivion
Step One: Eliminate an Innocent Target to Encounter Lucien Lachance
To embark on your journey with the Dark Brotherhood, you must first commit a heinous act: the cold-blooded murder of an innocent NPC. Ideally, this should be done discreetly to avoid attracting unwanted attention.
A practical choice for your dark deed is to travel to Bravil, located in the southeastern region of Cyrodiil. Nearby the Imperial City, Bravil offers a suitable setting for your initiation. While you can target any innocent NPC, it is advisable to avoid characters tied to quests, such as major NPCs. A good option is to look for beggars, as they are low-risk targets.
Fast travel to the West Gate of Bravil. Once inside, seek out Wretched Aia, a beggar who moves around the church area. Wait for an opportune moment—preferably when no one else is around—and approach her stealthily.
Utilize your Sneak skills to get close, then strike with an arrow or a melee weapon for a significant damage boost. Once she falls, you will receive a notification stating, “Your killing has been observed by forces unknown…”marking the start of your path to the Dark Brotherhood.
Step Two: Complete “A Knife In The Dark”at the Inn of Ill Omen
After your first kill, find a suitable place for rest—be it an inn or a bedroll. Upon awakening, you will encounter Lucien Lachance, who will commend you for your merciless act and extend an invitation to join the Dark Brotherhood.
However, your initiation is not complete. You must carry out a quest named “A Knife In The Dark”, in which you are tasked with eliminating a man named Rufio at the Inn of Ill Omen, located just north of Bravil. Lucien will provide you with the Blade of Woe to carry out your assignment.
Proceed to the Inn of Ill Omen and converse with the innkeeper, who will inform you of Rufio’s whereabouts. As you sneak through the establishment, ensure you are in Stealth mode as you enter the back room. If your timing is right and you come at night, Rufio will be asleep in his bed. Use the Blade of Woe to finish your task quietly.
Step Three: Report to the Cheydinhal Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary
Following the assassination of Rufio, rest in his bed, or any bed for that matter, to activate the final stage of your initiation. Lucien will once again appear upon waking, extending a formal offer to enter the Dark Brotherhood’s Cheydinhal Sanctuary.
To access the Sanctuary, locate the Ancient Black Door beneath a concealed house in the eastern section of Cheydinhal. Use a Lockpick to gain entry and navigate through the caverns until you reach the door.
When prompted with the question, “What is the color of night?”, respond with “Sanguine, my Brother.”This passphrase is only available to those who have met Lucien first; otherwise, you will remain locked out until you discover it on your own.
Once inside the Sanctuary, communicate with Ocheeva to officially join the Dark Brotherhood. You will be rewarded with a complete set of Shrouded Armor and a Shrouded Hood, which provide substantial bonuses to various stats.
Afterward, engage with other Brotherhood members and don’t forget to locate Vincente Valtieri, a vampire who will assign you your initial contracts in the Dark Brotherhood.
