Jim Carrey has opened up about the complexities involved in portraying both Ivo and Gerald Robotnik in the anticipated Sonic the Hedgehog 3. He reprises his role as the iconic villain, sharing the spotlight with Shadow the Hedgehog, played by Keanu Reeves, in an ambitious quest for world domination. This time, Carrey faces the unique challenge of embodying the elder Robotnik, yet the distinction between the two characters remains somewhat unclear as viewers await the film’s release.
In an interview with ScreenRant, Carrey highlighted a significant contrast between the characters: “Gerald’s a little bit of a tougher generation than Ivo,”he stated. To illustrate the complexity of his dual roles, Carrey drew a parallel to Eddie Murphy’s performance in The Nutty Professor, where multiple characters are represented. Throughout production, actor Brendan Murphy assisted Carrey by standing in for him, allowing for seamless interaction as they switched between the two roles during various scenes. This coordination was essential, as Carrey often had to respond to audio recordings of himself performing as one Robotnik while portraying the other. Here’s how he described the process:
It’s a very technically difficult thing to do. First of all, you’ve got to start with the personalities. You’ve got to start with the fact that Gerald’s a little bit of a tougher generation than Ivo, and Ivo just gets all gooey when he finds out he has a grandfather. And Gerald is the rock that he crawled out from under. But they’re a little bit different in their kind of aims. They’re just a little bit different, and we find out why.
The physical act of performing in the same scene with yourself, I don’t know how Eddie did it, because it was really something. It was very difficult, and I had a wonderful actor named Brendan Murphy who jumped in with me, and he did the other part. So, I would do Robotnik and he would do Gerald, and I would do Gerald and he’d do Robotnik, and I’d be sitting there as Robotnik performing and telling him how I may eventually do that side of the character. And then when I was that side of the character, I’d be reminding him of how I maybe did that side of the character. So, it was very technically difficult. A lot of times I was acting with him, but I was reacting to a disembodied voice that I had done the day before coming from the ceiling somewhere. So, it’s a trick. Acting these days, it’s a lot of imagination and a lot of pantomime.
Carrey’s Insights on Two Distinct Characters
Examining the Contrast Between Ivo & Gerald

Carrey’s remarks suggest a clear distinction between Ivo and Gerald that will unfold as the plot of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 develops. The elder Robotnik seems driven by motives of revenge, collaborating with Shadow and later involving his grandson in his schemes. This alliance may set the stage for a dynamic exploration of their contrasting approaches and differing objectives. Viewers will have to wait until the film’s premiere for the full extent of their differences to be revealed.
Carrey’s approach to his performances echoes Murphy’s multifaceted role in The Nutty Professor, where multiple characters interact dynamically. The use of techniques such as having another actor present and responding to recorded lines aids in establishing a natural rhythm to the character exchanges, despite originating from the same performer. Given that Gerald Robotnik is poised to showcase unique traits, audiences can expect a noticeable disparity between the two roles, even when portrayed by a single actor.
