BLACKPINK stands out in the K-pop industry as one of the few groups that operates without a designated leader. Formed in 2016, the group consists of four talented members—Jennie, Rosé, Jisoo, and Lisa—who make decisions collaboratively based on their strong dynamics. YG Entertainment’s founder clarified that the absence of a leader stems from this unique inter-member relationship.
On March 7, 2025, Jennie released her debut solo album, Ruby, which comprises 15 tracks and includes various artist collaborations. Central to the album is Jennie’s growth and evolving identity as a musician.
Just two days prior to the album’s launch, she appeared on Apple Music’s talk show with Zane Lowe entitled, JENNIE: The Ruby Interview with Zane Lowe, where she reflected on her formative experiences within BLACKPINK.
Insights on BLACKPINK’s Leadership Structure
During her interview, when asked by Zane Lowe if she ever envisioned herself as BLACKPINK’s leader or felt protective of her group members, Jennie offered a nuanced perspective without a clear yes or no. She acknowledged having often taken on the responsibilities normally associated with a leader, indicating that her bandmates trusted her judgment.
A noteworthy comment from Yang Hyun-suk, founder of YG Entertainment, during the showcase of BLACKPINK’s debut single album Square One, emphasizes this point:
“There were many groups that YG birthed, and we decided to go without a leader for BLACKPINK. The group never had a leader from the get-go. Because the four of them spent such a long time together, whenever a project is suggested to them, they discuss it together for the results.”
Jennie’s Journey to Solo Success: The Album Ruby
Ruby marks Jennie’s first release under her new label, Odd Atelier. Although she parted ways with YG Entertainment to explore her solo career, her commitment to BLACKPINK remains steadfast.
During her conversation with Zane Lowe, Jennie expressed the personal significance of her solo project, stating:
“The greatest part of this solo project for me was having time with myself—something I never really had before.”
She elaborated on her personal growth, stating:
“Understanding my value and believing in that is, for me, that was the biggest learning. .. To tell myself that I love myself, that I’m worth it, that I’m so proud of myself.”
The album features the track “Like Jennie,”which, prior to its release, led to controversy over alleged similarities to Rani’s Intro Theme, composed by Pritam for the film Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. Following the incident’s virality, Pritam publicly dismissed the accusations and encouraged fans to enjoy the music as intended.
Ruby includes collaborations with prominent artists such as Dua Lipa, Doechii, Dominic Fike, Childish Gambino, Kali Uchis, and FKJ, although these tracks are exclusive to the digital version of the album. The physical edition consists of solo tracks by Jennie, showcasing her unique artistry.
In the lead-up to the album’s release, Jennie hosted listening events in multiple countries. She also launched her concert series, The Ruby Experience, across the U.S. and South Korea, promising to donate a portion of the LA concert proceeds to wildfire relief efforts.
