Lindsay-Hogg further elaborated on her character, reflecting on her compassionate nature:
“An instinctively empathetic person who was loved by everyone who met her. We spoke on the phone almost every day for the past 40 years.”
Celebrated Career and Iconic Roles
In the 1985 film Return to Oz, Jean Marsh showcased her remarkable versatility by portraying two distinct characters: Princess Mombi and Nurse Wilson. As Princess Mombi, she became a memorable secondary antagonist, embodying a terrifying sorceress who is known for her sinister tactics, including head-switching and commanding the deranged Wheelers in the ruins of Emerald City.
Mombi is depicted as a cowardly character who scrambles to appease the Nome King, reflecting her desire to maintain power while being ultimately fearful of the consequences of her actions. She conspires with the Nome King to eliminate Dorothy and her companions upon Dorothy’s return to the Land of Oz, further emphasizing her role as a formidable villain.
In her dual role, Marsh also played Nurse Wilson, a significant adversary for Dorothy in the live-action adaptation. Nurse Wilson features prominently when Dorothy is admitted to a mental health facility due to insomnia. In a tense moment, she observes the hospital staff preparing to restrain Dorothy, reminding her of the promise she made to her family to cooperate with the medical team.
Intriguing Character Dynamics
Nurse Wilson is portrayed as coldly professional, conducting tests on Dorothy amidst a brewing storm, which adds tension to her character. The climax unfolds as an unexpected lightning strike initiates a fire within the clinic, allowing another patient to assist in Dorothy’s escape, which ultimately leads to Nurse Wilson being implicated in Dr. Worley’s unethical practices.
Despite her villainous roles, Jean Marsh’s contributions to film and television extend far beyond Return to Oz. She was also celebrated for her performances in acclaimed productions such as Upstairs, Downstairs, Willow, Doctor Who, and The House of Eliot.
