Japanese Breakfast Unveils Latest Album ‘For Melancholy Brunettes (& Sad Women)’

Michelle Zauner’s Japanese Breakfast Releases Highly Anticipated Album

After an extensive four-year hiatus, Michelle Zauner’s indie pop band, Japanese Breakfast, has made a triumphant return with their fourth studio album, For Melancholy Brunettes (& sad women), which was officially released on Friday.

Continuing a Successful Journey

This new album follows the success of Jubilee, which garnered critical acclaim and became Japanese Breakfast’s most celebrated project to date. The previous album earned Zauner notable Grammy nominations, including Best New Artist and Best Alternative Music Album at the 64th Annual Grammy Awards in 2022.

Singles and Production Insights

Zauner initially teased the new album in January when she shared the lead single, “Orlando In Love.” Just a month later, the second single, “Mega Circuit,” continued to capture the attention of fans. The production of the album was handled by Blake Mills, a renowned producer with an impressive portfolio that includes artists like Fiona Apple, Perfume Genius, Dawes, and Alabama Shakes.

Celebration and Upcoming Tour Dates

In honor of the album launch, Japanese Breakfast is set to perform at a sold-out event at El Museo Del Barrio in New York this Saturday. Additionally, the band will embark on a nationwide tour, starting with performances at Coachella next month, marking their return to the festival for the first time since 2022.

Beyond Music: Literary Ventures

Apart from her musical endeavors, Michelle Zauner is also an accomplished author. In 2021, she released her memoir, Crying in H Mart, which became a New York Times bestseller. The memoir’s popularity led to a planned film adaptation, with Will Sharpe, known for his role in The White Lotus, set to direct. However, Zauner recently shared in an interview with Ssense that Sharpe is no longer attached to the project and indicated that the film is “not happening anytime soon.”

Zauner stated, “Right now, I’m focusing on other creative projects, so the film will have to wait.”
