Is Sea of Thieves sailing to new platforms? PS5 and Switch ports rumors explained

For some time, rumors swirled about the possibility of Xbox third-party releases like Rare’s Sea of Thieves being ported to PS5 and Switch. Let’s break down what we know now.

Sea of Thieves, the multiplayer pirate adventure, has been a hit with fans since its release, with more than 4 million players on Xbox and PC in its first few months of release. Then in 2020, after its release on Steam, the game topped the global best sellers list.

In early 2024, rumors began to swirl around this iconic Microsoft title in that it could be making its way to PlayStation 5 and the Nintendo Switch.

Following the official Xbox Podcast, we now have confirmation on whether or not these rumors were true. So, let’s break down everything we know.

Is Sea of Thieves coming to PS5 and Nintendo Switch?

Yes, a PS5 and Switch port of Sea of Thieves will be coming sometime in the future. While we don’t know the exact date just yet, it will likely be sometime in 2024.

Phil Spencer, Sarah Bond, and Matt Booty confirmed the news during the Official Xbox Podcast titled, ‘Updates on the Xbox Business.’

During the podcast, the Microsoft Gaming CEO said, “We’ve made the decision that we’re going to take four games to the other consoles.”

While neither Spencer, Bond, nor Booty outright confirmed which four titles would make their way outside of Xbox, sources close the the company have confirmed Sea of Thieves is one of those titles.

Additionally, Spencer confirmed that neither Indiana Jones nor Starfield were two of the four games that will be coming to other platforms in the future.

According to Spencer, it will only be a matter of time before the team at Rare announce their plans to bring Sea of Thieves to both the PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch. Sony and Nintendo fans should keep an eye out for any official news in the coming months.
