Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is set to launch on PlayStation 5, but will it come to Nintendo Switch in the future?
The original Final Fantasy VII famously caused a divide between Square Enix and Nintendo, as the series moved to the PlayStation instead of the N64. Nintendo fans didn’t get a port of Final Fantasy VII until it was released on the Switch in 2019.
The repaired relationship between Square Enix and Nintendo might have allowed Cloud and Sephiroth to join Super Smash Bros, but it doesn’t extend to newer games, as Final Fantasy VII Remake is currently unavailable on Nintendo platforms.
But what about Final Fantasy VII Rebirth? The game is set to be a PlayStation 5 exclusive for a short period, but what happens when that console exclusivity window ends, and the Cloud is free to have adventures on different platforms?
Is Final Fantasy VII Rebirth coming to Nintendo Switch?
At the time of writing, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is not confirmed to be coming to Nintendo Switch. Currently, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is only confirmed for PlayStation 5, and it cannot come to other systems until after May 29, 2024, when the exclusivity window ends.
Even when the exclusivity window is passed, there’s little chance that Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will come to Nintendo Switch. The game is a graphical showcase on the PlayStation 5 and may well melt the Nintendo Switch if it tries to run it. This doesn’t even consider Final Fantasy VII Rebirth’s ridiculous file size.
The only possible way Final Fantasy VII Rebirth could come to Nintendo Switch is via cloud streaming, but the fact that this wasn’t attempted with Final Fantasy VII Remake suggests that Square Enix isn’t interested in releasing the games in that manner.
While Final Fantasy VII Rebirth on Nintendo Switch is unlikely, there’s always a chance that it could come to the rumored successor to the system. If the Switch 2 is powerful enough, it could receive a port of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.
As it stands, Final Fantasy VII Remake and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth are unlikely to come to the Nintendo Switch, though its successor is up in the air. Nintendo fans must be satisfied with their exclusive use of Cloud and Sephiroth in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
