Is Dana About to Exit? The Pitt May Be Losing One of Its Most Beloved Characters & I’m Heartbroken

Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for the season 1 finale of The Pitt. The charge nurse, Dana Evans (played by Katherine LaNasa), has become a standout character in The Pitt. However, the conclusion of the first season hinted at a potential departure for her character. In the final moments of season 1, after the dust settled from the harrowing PittFest shooting, each character was afforded a moment of reflection. While some, like Dr. Mohan (Supriya Ganesh) and Dr. Robby (Noah Wyle), confronted emotional distress, others attempted to carry on as best as they could. Dana, on the other hand, appeared to face a breaking point.

In an early scene of the finale, Dana confided in Dr. Langdon (Patrick Ball), expressing her contemplation of resigning from her role. Following a particularly challenging shift, marred by an altercation with a patient, Dana declared to Langdon, “I just need to wrap things up and get out of here.” This revelation left many fans, including myself, concerned that Dana might indeed leave the show, which could mean losing a beloved character.

Signs Indicating Dana’s Serious Consideration of Quitting

A Touching Farewell: Dana’s Final Goodbyes at PTMC

A key moment that indicated Dana’s sincerity was when she removed family photographs from her workspace, including treasured images of her newborn. This act symbolized her intent to leave behind everything she cherished, suggesting she did not plan to return to PTMC. Many people may flirt with the idea of quitting, but typically, few take the drastic step of clearing their desk unless they are committed to their decision.

Further reinforcing the notion of her resolve was Dana’s demeanor after she removed her pictures. She surveyed the emergency room as if this were her final farewell. Upon encountering Robby, she was unresponsive when he remarked he would see her on Monday. Her silence hinted at an inability to either reassure him with a lie or face the uncomfortable truth about her resignation. This silence seems to signal that Dana’s decision to depart is indeed weighing heavily on her mind.

The Impact of Dana’s Absence in Season 2 of The Pitt

The Vital Role of Dana’s Character

Should Dana’s character exit the series, it would leave a significant void in the narrative of The Pitt. Her lighthearted humor balances the more somber moments of the show, preventing it from slipping into darkness. Furthermore, as a charge nurse, she plays a crucial role in connecting the different characters and serving as a sounding board for their concerns. For instance, Dr. Collins (Tracy Ifeachor) shared thoughts with Dana that she might not have confided in anyone else.

With Dana possibly leaving, season 2 will be challenged to fill the gap left behind. Finding a companionable figure who can replicate Dana’s unique blend of nurturing and assertiveness will prove daunting. Moreover, the time jump to eight months later means that any new character introduced to fulfill this role will lack the established ties Dana has with the rest of the cast. Overall, without Dana’s vibrant presence, the show may lose its appeal, and many fans may find it hard to connect without her.

Creator Insights on Dana’s Possible Departure

R. Scott Gemmill’s Perspective on Dana’s Future

None

The creator of The Pitt, R. Scott Gemmill, shared some thoughts regarding Dana’s possible exit. His comments were somewhat optimistic yet cautious. He indicated that while Dana might feel compelled to leave PTMC, her undeniable connection to the hospital suggests she may not be able to stay away permanently.

Yeah, I was even thinking we should have had her flip [Robby] off, but that was the bridge too far. But I think Dana — I think the thing about this show is you should never get too comfortable with any one character because the nature of the business and the world is that life throws things at you unexpectedly, and things can change in a heartbeat. So I think when Dana leaves, she’s very intent on leaving for good. That’s why she takes her photos. That’s why she doesn’t admit to Robby whether she’ll be back Monday. And I think she has to take some time and think about things. And I would guarantee if next season took place the next day that she wouldn’t be there. So when we do come back, we’ll have to see. But she’s a trooper, and that place is her home, and she’s kind of like the den mother. So I think it would be hard for her, difficult for her to stay away as well. But when she does come back, I imagine she would be a little bit different.

There is a glimmer of hope in Gemmill’s statements. As he expressed, it’s entirely feasible that Dana could return in season 2, as PTMC is, in many ways, her second home. Nonetheless, should she make a comeback, she might not embody the same cheerful demeanor we’ve come to love. Depending on her experiences as season 1 concluded, Dana could emerge as a wearier and more reserved individual. How her character evolves could fundamentally change the fabric of The Pitt, even if she does return.
