Captain Jason Chambers of Below Deck Down Under is becoming increasingly frustrated with Bosun Wihan Du Toit. However, it’s worth questioning whether Captain Jason should reflect on his own conduct as well. Since his debut in the first season, Captain Jason has emerged as a fan favorite within the franchise, recognized for his decisive leadership. In his second season, he showcased his commitment to his team by taking swift action against crew misconduct, letting go of those who broke the rules. Unfortunately, in the current third season, his leadership seems to have faltered, leading to a deteriorating team environment.
Criticism has mounted regarding his management of Wihan, whose lack of competence has become alarmingly apparent. Wihan’s relaxed attitude has led to several risky mistakes, including allowing guests to use a malfunctioning jetski, which fortunately didn’t end in disaster. As frustrations surged among the crew, Captain Jason initially encouraged them to resolve issues independently. Now, as tensions boil over, he is finally addressing Wihan’s shortcomings, although some believe his intervention may be too late. Yet, Captain Jason himself has made notable missteps, putting his previously solid reputation at risk.
Jason Calls Out Wihan
Fed Up With Wihan’s Negativity

Captain Jason has been slow to respond to the initial crew complaints regarding Wihan’s performance, but the rising toxicity on board has finally caught his attention. When Wihan sought out the captain to voice concerns about Chief Stew Lara Rigby, Jason’s previous advice for them to address issues themselves seemed to fall by the wayside. Wihan anticipated support from Jason, given the latter’s past behavior, but instead, he received a stark reality check.
Recognizing the chain of negativity infecting the crew, Captain Jason confronted Wihan about his divisive attitude, stating that he was “not cohesive” with the team. The captain specifically pointed out Wihan’s lack of accountability, suggesting that a change was imperative, which directly put Wihan’s position at risk.
Captain Jason’s Own Sketchy Behavior
Neither Jason nor Wihan Are Perfect
While Captain Jason enjoys significant support from fans, his behavior is not without scrutiny. He has exhibited an unsettling degree of comfort while meeting guests’ requests for a club-like ambiance on the Katina, even appearing in a silky robe while smoking a cigar during the so-called “Captain’s Lounge” moments. Although this playful display delighted guests, it raises eyebrows regarding the professionalism expected from a leader.
Given Below Deck’s history with issues surrounding sexual misconduct, it would be wise for Captain Jason to maintain a more fitting demeanor in his authoritative role.
Both Captain Jason and Wihan exhibit flaws that impact their leadership credibility. They have shown reluctance to accept feedback: Jason reacted defensively to perceived disrespect from Chef Tzarina Mace-Ralph and Stew Marina Marcondes de Barros, while Wihan bristled at Lara Rigby’s constructive criticism. Both seem resistant to acknowledge the criticisms directed at them. As the captain, it falls on Jason to steer the ship’s dynamics effectively. Wihan’s shaky position may be a direct reflection of Jason’s questionable examples.
Will Jason and Wihan Repair Their Rift?
Possibly at the Point of No Return

Given Wihan’s persistent negative influence on the crew, it seems unlikely that he will regain Captain Jason’s trust. Wihan has overlooked multiple warnings, and even under reprimand, has failed to recognize how his actions have contributed to the ongoing issues aboard the ship. Captain Jason has consistently emphasized the importance of a positive atmosphere, and with Wihan identified as a disruptive force, it’s challenging to see a path forward for their working relationship.
Historically, Captain Jason is quick to dismiss any team member not contributing positively to the crew’s morale. Although he has tolerated Wihan’s behavior until recently, the escalations in recent episodes suggest their partnership may be beyond repair. Once Wihan is relieved of his duties on the Katina, I believe the rest of Below Deck Down Under season 3 could sail much more smoothly.
Below Deck Down Under season 3 airs on Mondays at 9 p.m. ET and is available for streaming the following day on Peacock.
