InZOI Director Discusses the Drawbacks of the Game’s Realistic Art Style

Overview

  • InZOI’s commitment to a realistic art style has created hurdles in incorporating humor, as comedic elements sometimes clash with its serious visuals.
  • The game faced challenges with suggestive imagery in character shower scenes, leading developers to implement modifications for better player immersion.
  • Although InZOI diverges from The Sims in terms of aesthetics and humor, both titles possess unique qualities that may contribute to their enduring success.

The director of InZOI, Hyungjun ‘Kjun’ Kim, has openly discussed the challenges that arise from the game’s realistic art style, particularly in contrast to the more whimsical visuals typical of titles like The Sims. Although the game’s stunning graphics have garnered significant attention, they have also complicated the development process in several key ways.

Despite having just launched, InZOI is already making headlines by achieving impressive player engagement on its opening day. Fans have praised the game for its graphical integrity and innovative character creator. However, there are notable distinctions between InZOI and The Sims that go beyond mere aesthetics.

In an interview with PCGamesN, Kjun explored the limitations posed by the game’s visual style, particularly its effect on humor. He noted that certain humorous scenarios “didn’t quite fit with the grounded visuals,” a fact that has disappointed developers who recognize that comedy plays a vital role in the appeal of titles like The Sims, where unexpected funny moments frequently occur. The exaggerated behaviors and animations of Sims contribute significantly to the lighthearted nature of the franchise, a quality that InZOI struggles to replicate.

The Drawbacks of Realism in InZOI

Players of InZOI may have noticed that characters, known as Zois, maintain modesty by keeping towels wrapped around them during bathroom scenes. Kim clarified that the Zois’ suggestive appearance when rendered partially blurred poses challenges, contrasting with the approach taken by The Sims, which has used pixelation in similar scenarios. Although this adjustment may break immersion for some players, it remains a reasonable choice considering historical context.

While nudity and sexual themes in video games have become more accepted over the years, The Sims initially sparked controversy with its portrayal of such content. The series faced scrutiny during the era of The Sims 2, where activist Jack Thompson falsely accused it of featuring explicit sexual situations, allegations fueled by real-world debates surrounding video game content. Despite the evolving landscape of public perception regarding gaming, the developers of InZOI have chosen to tread carefully in this area.

As InZOI continues to carve its niche within the gaming landscape, its potential to compete with The Sims 4 remains to be assessed over time. Nevertheless, with both games showcasing distinct strengths in their approaches, there is considerable potential for both to thrive in the gaming market.
