King Matt the First: A New Documentary Premiering at Hot Docs 2025
Polish director Jaśmina Wójcik’s latest documentary, King Matt the First, is set to make its world debut in the International Spectrum Competition during the 32nd Hot Docs Canadian Documentary Festival, which runs from April 24 to May 4. The Hollywood Reporter is excited to present the exclusive first look at the film, inspired by Janusz Korczak’s classic novel. This adaptation delves into the profound connection between two sisters, Zoja and Lea, and their journey through childhood.
The Story of Two Sisters
The film explores the vibrant world shared by Zoja and Lea, filled with laughter, exploration, and the typical bickering of siblings. The initial resemblance and bond between the sisters suggest an unbreakable connection. However, as they grow older, the dynamics shift. Zoja’s evolving interests lead her away from playful activities with Lea, as she immerses herself in literature and begins to forge connections with her peers. Despite their diverging paths, both sisters grapple with an underlying dread of transitioning into adulthood, which they view as fraught with peril amidst a backdrop of environmental destruction and societal apathy.
A Parallel to Korczak’s Vision
In Korczak’s original narrative, a ten-year-old monarch envisions radical reforms but struggles with the implementation in real life. King Matt the First similarly invites viewers into a world liberated from adult constraints, showcasing young individuals teetering on the edge of maturity. This powerful storytelling aims to resonate deeply with audiences, reflecting themes relevant to both historical and contemporary contexts.
Wójcik’s Personal Reflection
Wójcik articulates her personal motivations behind the film: “This project represents my culmination of experiences as a mother, an artist, a director, an educator, and a member of society. It’s my voice advocating for the safeguarding of childhood and recognizing the inherent humanity in children. We must listen to their needs and support them within a nurturing framework — a responsibility that resides with adults.”
Context of Creation
Korczak penned his influential novel during the interwar period, a time rife with conflict. King Matt the First has been created within a similar atmosphere, reflecting challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic and ongoing crises in Ukraine and Gaza. Wójcik notes, “The film stands as a plea for a revolution of sensitivity – a chance to learn from children and reconnect with our inner child.”
Production Details
Produced by Marta Dużbabel and Agnieszka Rostropowicz at Poland’s Pinot Films, the project has also seen collaboration from FixaFilm and the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. Backing from the Polish Film Institute has further supported this important work.
