Imax Expands Partnership with Toho to Enhance Cinematic Experience in Japan
Imax is deepening its collaboration with Toho, one of Japan’s prominent cinema operators. Announced on Tuesday, this agreement involves the installation of six new Imax with Laser systems throughout Japan, marking a significant commitment to advancing cinematic technology in the region.
New Locations and Upgrades
The deal will see two new Imax theaters opening in Toho Cinemas located in Tokyo, while it will also facilitate growth into pivotal suburban areas in Japan, such as Utsunomiya, Nisshin, Toyama, and Motosu. The theaters in Tokyo, Utsunomiya, and Nisshin are scheduled to debut by the end of this year, with the Toyama and Motosu locations expected to welcome audiences in the first half of 2026. Further, the agreement includes an upgrade for a pre-existing location to the Imax with Laser format. Additionally, Toho Cinemas Hibiya will feature a second Imax system, turning it into the first complex outside North America to house two Imax theaters.
Strategic Importance of Toho Cinemas
Toho Cinemas plays a crucial role as Imax’s largest exhibition partner in Japan, a country recognized as the world’s third-largest theatrical market. By the close of 2026, Toho is projected to operate 16 Imax venues. Last year, three of its theaters emerged as the highest-grossing Imax locations across Japan, underscoring the strong demand for premium cinematic experiences.
Future Prospects and Upcoming Releases
Looking ahead to 2025, both Imax and Toho have reasons to be optimistic about their collaborative prospects. Anticipation builds around the upcoming release of the sequel to Toho’s hit anime film, Demon Slayer. This flick is notably the highest-grossing Japanese-language title for Imax and holds the record for the top-grossing Japanese anime film worldwide. The sequel is set to release in Japan in July, following a re-release of the original film in May.
Commitment to Quality and Audience Experience
Takayuki Ikeda, CEO of Toho Cinemas, expressed enthusiasm regarding the collaboration, stating, “We are pleased to have signed the agreement to install six new Imax theaters. We have long sought to provide this premier visual experience to as many viewers as possible. Particularly noteworthy is that Toho Cinemas Hibiya has attained approval to install two Imax theaters, an exceptional achievement globally.”
Imax’s Global Footprint
Currently, Imax operates 53 locations within Japan, supplemented by an additional 17 venues in its project pipeline. Worldwide, the company boasts a staggering 1,807 Imax systems across 90 different countries and territories, reaffirming its leadership in providing cutting-edge cinematic technology.
