Hulu Partners with Liz Meriwether for New Drama Series
Hulu is set to collaborate once again with Liz Meriwether, the visionary behind The Dropout, as it greenlights a new drama series inspired by the 1987 film Black Widow.
Details of the Upcoming Series
This forthcoming untitled series will center around an FBI agent who delves into the secrets of a notorious female serial killer’s past in an attempt to track her down. Emmy Rossum, who is in discussions to take on the lead role, will also serve as an executive producer for the project.
A Look Back at Black Widow
The original Black Widow film, which starred Debra Winger as an FBI agent and Theresa Russell as a cunning killer, tells the story of a woman who marries wealthy men only to eliminate them for their inheritance. It’s important to note that this narrative is distinct from the Marvel character, also named Black Widow, portrayed by Scarlett Johansson.
Meriwether’s Proven Track Record
Known for her successful series The Dropout, which examined the life of Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes, Meriwether has already made a mark at Hulu. This production not only received critical acclaim but also earned an Emmy for Amanda Seyfried’s performance and garnered nominations for best limited or anthology series, with Meriwether herself recognized for her writing contributions. Furthermore, she co-created the FX series Dying for Sex, which will also be available on Hulu.
Rossum’s Recent Projects
Emmy Rossum, who has recently showcased her talents in The Crowded Room on Apple TV+ and executive produced Angelyne for Peacock, continues to expand her impressive repertoire. She also played a key role in producing Three Women for Starz in 2023.
Production Team and Representation
The series will be produced by Disney’s 20th Television and Searchlight Television, with Meriwether co-producing alongside Rossum, Sara Moskowitz, and Ron Bass, the original writer of the 1987 film. Representational firms include WME and McKuin Frankel for Meriwether, while Rossum is represented by MGMT Entertainment, WME, Wolf Kasteler Public Relations, and Felker Toczek.
With such a talented team behind the production, anticipation is building for this new take on a classic narrative as Hulu continues to broaden its original content offerings.
