How to get Rotom in Pokemon Go and can it be Shiny?

Generation 4’s Electric/Ghost-type Rotom has finally made its base form debut in Pokemon Go, but can it be found as a Shiny? Let’s go over everything we know.

Fans of Generation 4’s Pokemon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum titles likely remember the feeling of surprise that came with encountering Rotom for the first time.

While players who want to catch Rotom in Pokemon Go don’t have to mess around with a haunted TV, there are still some specific things to know about catching this Electric/Ghost-type Pokemon.

With Rotom’s base form finally making its debut through the Los Angeles portion of the Sinnoh Tour 2024 event, let’s break down exactly how to catch this tricky ghost in Pokemon Go.

Currently, the only way to find Rotom in Pokemon Go is by completing the Global Unlock: Ghost in the Machine Special Research quest. This event is part of the Los Angeles portion of the Sinnoh Tour 2024 event.

Specifically, trainers who attended the Los Angeles portion of the event worked together to uncover a code, which would unlock the Ghost in the Machine Special Research quest.

The quest’s code is 0HY0UF0UNDM3.

Thankfully, this Special Research is available globally to all players—but only for a limited time. Trainers can complete this quest from February 16, 2024, until February 25, 2024. By completing the quest, you will get an encounter with Rotom.

Can Rotom be Shiny in Pokemon Go?

While Rotom still has limited availability, yes, you can catch a Shiny Rotom in Pokemon Go. Trainers will have to be quite lucky for their Rotom encounter to be Shiny, but it is indeed possible.

It’s important to note that while Rotom can change forms in the mainline Pokemon games, this is not yet possible in Pokemon Go. Additionally, only Wash, Mow, Frost, and standard Rotom are available to catch as of February 2024.
