Fans eagerly await updates from the renowned author George R.R. Martin, particularly regarding his thoughts on HBO’s adaptation of Game of Thrones. As anticipation builds for House of the Dragon Season 3, showrunner Ryan Condal has opened the door to discussing Martin’s critiques of this beloved prequel.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly on March 31, 2025, Condal shared insights into Martin’s criticism documented on his LiveJournal blog, Not A Blog, back in August and September 2024. Although Martin later retracted those posts, their content reached fans, revealing his discontent with certain creative choices. Condal, while acknowledging this feedback, did not personally review the posts but emphasized his admiration for Martin as “a literary icon”and a “personal hero,”expressing disappointment over the critiques.
When discussing his relationship with Martin, Condal expressed that:
“I made every effort to include George in the adaptation process. I really did. Over years and years.”
Notably, Condal noted that while they previously enjoyed a “strong collaboration,”it appeared that Martin was increasingly reluctant to recognize the practicalities involved in adapting the source material. He underscored the balancing act involved in being both a producer, focused on the logistical aspects of storytelling within the framework of a TV series, and a fan passionate about the Game of Thrones narrative. He concluded by expressing hope for a future reconciliation of their working relationship, stating that he “can only hope that George and I can rediscover that harmony someday.”
Throughout its production, House of the Dragon has made several modifications from its source, Fire and Blood, with fans voicing concerns over certain changes made in Season 2. Condal defended these alterations, citing the necessity to adapt for television, as well as the constraints dictated by their budget. To provide context, it was reported by Variety that HBO allocated around $100 million for each season of Game of Thrones, while each episode of House of the Dragon’s first season cost less than $20 million.
House of the Dragon debuted on HBO on August 21, 2022, and received a favorable reception from viewers who appreciated the opportunity to revisit its rich world and its captivating dragons. The series boasts an 86% rating on the Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer and 78% on the Audience Score, in comparison to Game of Thrones’ ratings of 89% and 85%. These figures indicate robust performance for a prequel series that generated substantial anticipation. Season 2 premiered on June 16, 2024, with a reduction in episode count from ten in the first season to eight in the second. The cast features talents such as Emma D’Arcy and Milly Alcock, portraying different phases of Rhaenyra Targaryen, joined by Steve Toussaint, Matt Smith, Paddy Considine, and Eve Best.
In responding to Martin’s critiques, HBO CEO Casey Bloys affirmed the collaborative yet challenging professional relationship between the House of the Dragon creative team and the author. Martin has openly critiqued various aspects of the prequel, including the dragons, although he expressed positive feedback regarding the upcoming series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, commending its faithfulness to the original source material.
TV Line recently reported that House of the Dragon Season 3 is now in production as of March 31, 2025. New additions to the cast include Dan Fogler and Tommy Flanagan, and fans are undoubtedly excited to see what unfolds in the upcoming episodes. At this moment, however, there is still no official release date for Season 3.
