Given its captivating narrative, it is challenging to find significant faults with the show. However, a deeper examination of season 2 reveals that one specific character calls for greater development and presence in season 3. This character possesses substantial narrative scope, yet their evolution has remained relatively stagnant since season 1. While Severance is undeniably one of the most engrossing sci-fi series I have encountered, I am eager to see how it could elevate itself further by addressing this character’s growth.

Karen Aldridge’s portrayal of Asal Reghabi initially emerges in season 1 as a convenient plot point, appearing unexpectedly as a liaison for Pete and attempting to persuade Mark towards reintegration. Her character had the potential to embark on various compelling paths; however, her arc in season 2 unfolds at a frustratingly slow pace. Although she subjects Mark to numerous experiments, the reintegration process appears largely ineffective.
The ambiguity surrounding Reghabi’s characterization hints at her possible role as an antagonist in future seasons. Conversations with Mark suggest her knowledge of Lumon’s operations extends far beyond what she reveals, as she alludes to the company’s unethical practices and enigmas surrounding Gemma’s fate. While it is established that she was a surgeon for Lumon who implanted Mark’s chip, further details about her motives and backstory are notably scarce.
The uncertainty of Reghabi’s character advancement, particularly when her narrative suddenly shifts as she decides to flee in response to a call from Devon to Ms. Cobel, contributes to a sense of unresolved urgency in her storyline. She stands out as the only main character whose journey feels detached from the overall ensemble, rendering her development lackluster and rushed.

At this juncture in the series, it is crucial that Severance ceases to utilize Reghabi as a mere plot device. The narrative must shift focus to uncover her insights regarding Lumon. More importantly, the series must clarify whether her actions are guided by benevolent intentions or self-interest. Season 2 saw her inflict more challenges than benefits on Mark through resorting to intense reintegration trials that proved fruitless.
Season 3 could benefit from dedicating an episode to investigating Reghabi’s history with Lumon, akin to the approach taken with Ms. Cobel in season 2. Such a narrative direction could rectify the missteps surrounding Reghabi’s arc thus far. As a viewer, I remain invested in her overarching storyline and its intertwined connections with other Severance characters. Nevertheless, to fully harness the show’s potential, it is essential that Reghabi receives the narrative depth and clarity she rightfully deserves.
