49th Hong Kong International Film Festival Set to Begin

The eagerly anticipated 49th Hong Kong International Film Festival will commence on April 10, showcasing a diverse range of films from around the globe. The festival will feature two inaugural films: the Japanese drama The Brightest Sun and the Malaysia-Hong Kong co-production Pavane for an Infant. This year’s event will culminate on April 21 with the screening of the Golden Bear winner Dreams (Sex Love), directed by Norway’s Dag Johan Haugerud. The lineup was recently announced during a press conference held at Hong Kong’s Filmart Content Market.

Featured Films and Highlights

The Brightest Sun, directed by Tetsuya Nakashima, marks the filmmaker’s return after a seven-year hiatus. The movie is an adaptation of a popular novel by Bunzo Uchikai. Contrastingly, Pavane for an Infant, helmed by Chong Keat Aun, delves into the sensitive subject of baby abandonment, as experienced through the perspective of a female social worker, portrayed by Malaysian-Hong Kong actress Fish Liew.

Local Talents and Gala Screenings

This year’s festival will spotlight two local Hong Kong productions in its Gala Screenings segment. These include Valley of the Shadow of Death, directed by acclaimed actor Anthony Wong, and Montages Of A Modern Motherhood by Oliver Chan Siu-kuen. Furthermore, the Cinephile Paradise section will exhibit remarkable films that have previously made waves on the international festival circuit, featuring titles like Vivian Qu’s noir thriller Girls On Wire, Luca Guadagnino’s adaptation of Queer, and Yeo Siew Hua’s suspenseful Stranger Eyes.

A Celebration of Filmmaking Icons

Renowned actor and producer Louis Koo will be honored this year as the festival’s Filmmaker in Focus. The event will showcase 10 of his standout films, including classics such as The Suspect (1998), Naked Ambition (2003), Drug War (2013), and the recent Warriors of Future (2022). Additionally, Koo is set to engage with the audience during a public talk session, providing insights into his illustrious career.

Masterclasses and International Collaborations

This year’s festival will also feature esteemed international filmmakers like French director Leos Carax, Japanese star Ando Sakura, and Catalonian auteur Albert Serra, who will participate in various masterclasses and screenings. Carax will showcase his latest project, Annette, featuring performances by Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard, alongside his previous works such as Bad Blood (1986) and The Lovers on the Bridge (1991). Ando Sakura will present four of her notable films including Shoplifters (2018) and 100 Yen Love (2014). Meanwhile, Serra is scheduled to unveil his new documentary Afternoons of Solitude along with several of his earlier films.

As the festival draws near, excitement builds for a celebration that promises to spotlight cinematic creativity and cultural storytelling from both local and global perspectives.
