Donatella Versace Steps Down as Chief Creative Officer
On March 13, 2025, Donatella Versace, the renowned creative director of the iconic fashion house Versace, announced her decision to resign from her position as the Chief Creative Officer. Dario Vitale, who previously held the role of director of design and image at Miu Miu, is set to take over effective April 1, marking a significant transition in the brand’s leadership.
A Brief History of Versace
Founded in 1978 by Giovanni Maria “Gianni”Versace, the Italian luxury brand quickly rose to prominence under his vision. Gianni Versace was not only an exceptional designer but also a savvy businessman and socialite. The brand has since become synonymous with high fashion, offering a diverse range of products including clothing, accessories, fragrances, and home furnishings.
Dario Vitale: A New Era Begins
John D. Idol, the chairman and CEO of Capri Holdings, articulated the significance of this leadership change in a press statement:
“Today’s announcements were part of a thoughtful succession plan…. Since 1997, Donatella has led the creative vision for the House of Versace and played an integral role in the company’s global success. Donatella will be assuming the role of Chief Brand Ambassador and will continue to champion the… brand and its values.”
Idol expressed confidence in Vitale’s appointment, stating:
“We are excited to announce that Dario Vitale will be joining the House of Versace as its new Chief Creative Officer. He is a strong design leader, and we are confident that his talent and vision will be instrumental to Versace’s future growth.”
Donatella Versace’s Legacy
Donatella took the helm of design in September 1997 after the tragic death of her brother Gianni, with Santo Versace stepping in as CEO. In a testament to family ties, Gianni bequeathed half of his enterprise to his niece Allegra.
With Vitale’s new role, this marks the first time in the brand’s 47-year history that a leader without familial ties to the Versace name will take charge. According to a report by The Guardian on March 13, under Donatella’s leadership, Versace transformed into a global powerhouse, having been valued at $2 billion (£1.6 billion) at the time of its sale to Capri Holdings six and a half years ago.
Future Directions for Versace
In her new role as Chief Brand Ambassador, Donatella will focus on promoting the brand internationally and leading the company’s philanthropic initiatives. She expressed her enthusiasm for Vitale’s appointment through an Instagram statement:
“Championing the next generation of designers has always been important to me. I am thrilled that Dario Vitale will be joining us, and excited to see Versace through new eyes. I want to thank my incredible design team and all the employees… that I have had the privilege of working with for over three decades.”
She further reflected:
“It has been the greatest honor of my life to carry on my brother Gianni’s legacy…. He was the true genius, but I hope I have some of his spirit and tenacity.”
Market Implications
Interestingly, this leadership transition comes amid speculation reported by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation regarding potential negotiations between the Prada Group and Capri Holdings for the acquisition of Versace, following a purchase of two billion euros back in 2018.
