Health Filament Upgrade Locations in South of Midnight

As players navigate the challenges presented in South of Midnight, they will notice an increase in enemy encounters during combat. Given that dodging is the only method to evade damage effectively, enhancing maximum health becomes crucial for survival.

To boost Hazel’s health within the game, players need to discover and collect three Health Filaments at three separate points, totaling nine Health Filaments in South of Midnight. This guide outlines the specific locations of each Filament and offers additional tips on healing mechanics.

The first Health Filament can be found in Chapter 3, with players discovering one in nearly every chapter thereafter, except for Chapter 8 and the final two chapters. Collecting every three Filaments will progressively enhance their maximum health.

Players will easily spot the first Heart Filament, located directly on the main path toward their objective in Chapter 3.

Near the church graveyard’s edge, players will find a pole they can grapple onto, leading to a cave where the second Heart Filament is hidden.

#3 5 After taking down the Stigma in the village and collecting the Bell Strand, players should retrieve the Heart Filament before ascending Monarch Cotton.

To do this, they can grapple onto a pole in the opposite direction of their main objective and navigate through the sunflower field. Weaving two Echo Objects will allow them to reach the water tower and collect the Filament.

#4 6 In Chapter 6, players will encounter an old barn to the left of the road leading to their objective. While access to the second floor is blocked, they can launch Crouton into a cave behind the barn to remove the obstacle.

Afterward, they must return to the main road, where an Echo Object can be Weaved and pushed to access the barn’s roof. Breaking the boards will provide access to the Filament inside.

#5 7 Following a fight with the Brute Haint enemy, players will gain access to several paths. The cave located opposite their main objective can be accessed by breaking down the door using a Strand Push to find the next Filament.
#6 9 Before confronting the Tangle and entering Molly’s lair, players should explore the left side of the dirt path in search of a ledge. Moving left from ledge to ledge will lead them to the Heart Filament.
#7 10 After recovering Hazel’s weaving ability, players must Weave the Echo Object in the water. Instead of advancing forward, they can Weave a vine in the distance to grapple to a more distant area where the Heart Filament can be found.
#8 11 Following a battle with the monsters and prior to clearing the Stigma in the swamp, players will find an entrance across from their next objective. Here, they can Weave a trunk Echo to reach the Filament.
#9 12 After utilizing the airflow to reach the elevated section of the town, players will find the Heart Filament by looking to the right. They need to approach the Echo Objects and Weave them to begin the platforming necessary to obtain the Filament.

Players have the option to replay Chapters to collect any missed Heart Filaments, and they can do so without fully completing the Chapter for their progress to be saved. Once a Filament is retrieved in any Chapter, players are free to return to their earlier progress at any time.

Healing Mechanics in South of Midnight

Combat encounters can be particularly punishing in South of Midnight, and challenging platforming sequences may often leave players with minimal health. Therefore, mastering the healing mechanics is vital.

Healing in South of Midnight requires the use of Health Coils or Unraveling fallen enemies. Typically, there is only one Health Coil available during battles, and it can be used just once—unless players opt for an easier difficulty setting, in which case it will regenerate over time. Alternatively, players can Unravel a defeated enemy to regain some lost health; however, this method restores less health compared to the Coil and the opportunity will disappear quickly if not utilized immediately.

Given the absence of healing items or methods outside of combat, players should focus on collecting all Heart Filaments. Doing so increases their maximum health, allowing them to endure more damage and reduce the frequency of health loss.
