In a recent broadcast, acclaimed Twitch streamer and political commentator Hasan “HasanAbi”Piker expressed his critical perspective on a new artificial intelligence trend that has captivated online audiences. This trend is closely linked to OpenAI’s latest feature for ChatGPT, which allows users to transform their personal images into the enchanting, signature style of renowned animator Hayao Miyazaki from Studio Ghibli. The feature has sparked a wave of creative memes and visual content across social media platforms.
However, HasanAbi finds this development unsettling, suggesting that it detracts from the essence of what makes us human. He argues that the increasing reliance on AI for artistic expression contributes to a decline in our human qualities.
“He (Hayao Miyazaki) thought we’re done. Humanity is done. We are robbing ourselves of what makes us human, and he was right. We are now at that stage. We are becoming less and less human.”
Delving deeper into the topic, HasanAbi pointed out that Miyazaki has been a vocal critic of artificial intelligence in the creative realm. The artist, known for his dedication to meticulous, hand-drawn animation, stands in stark contrast to AI-generated art.
“Doing this with Miyazaki, it has to be deliberate. He is an advocate for famously frame-by-frame painting. No matter how difficult it is. We’re talking about a guy who is exactly at the opposite of AI art, who despises AI art.”
Moreover, HasanAbi condemned the usage of AI in art for purposes he deems unethical, particularly in creating propaganda. He expressed concern that using Miyazaki’s iconic style in such contexts can lead to negative repercussions.
“Now, they are using his art style this way to do propaganda for the shi**y right imperialist nation state in the dumbest, goofiest way possible. This dude is gonna kill himself. He’s gonna see this and end it all.”
Responses from Fellow Streamers: Asmongold Also Voices Concerns
HasanAbi is not alone in his critique. Fellow Twitch streamer Zack “Asmongold”shared his insights regarding the Studio Ghibli-inspired trend. He echoed similar sentiments about Miyazaki’s wariness of technological advancements in the arts, noting how fans continue to incorporate AI despite his objections. In a lighthearted yet poignant remark, he stated, “that’s life.”
“He does the media presentation of an artificial intelligence model which learns certain movements, and he (Miyazaki) goes, ‘I’m utterly disgusted…I strongly feel this is an insult to life itself.’ And what do people do in response to that? (Shows a AI-generated meme of Miyazaki speaking against AI) So, that’s life. That’s the way it goes, man.”
Currently, users wishing to create Studio Ghibli-style AI animations must subscribe to ChatGPT’s Plus, Pro, or Team plans, as the feature has not yet been made available to free users. However, expectations are that broader access will be provided in the near future.
