Hans Zimmer’s Decision to Decline MCU Film Scores: “I’ve Completed the Trifecta”

Hans Zimmer Remains Uninterested in Marvel Cinematic Universe

Renowned composer Hans Zimmer has firmly reiterated his decision to stay clear of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The acclaimed artist, who has won two Oscars, previously announced his retirement from superhero film scoring following the demanding project of Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016.

Zimmer’s extensive portfolio includes iconic works for films such as The Dark Knight Trilogy, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Wonder Woman 1984, and X-Men: Dark Phoenix. However, he has made it clear that he will not be collaborating with Marvel, despite their previous overtures.

The Podcast Revelation

During a recent episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, host Josh Horowitz expressed surprise at Zimmer’s absence from the MCU, asking, “Are you yourself kind of superheroed out? I’m kind of surprised the official MCU has never come calling, or if they have, you’ve said no?”

In response, Zimmer revealed, “They have, and it was always — timing wasn’t great. And really, quite honestly, I’m looking for other things right now. Look, I’ve done the trifecta. I’ve done Batman, Superman, Spider-Man, and Wonder Woman! I mean, what do you want me to do? Some of the minor characters? Probably yes.”

Horowitz humorously remarked, “This is Hans Zimmer, folks. Come on!” to which Zimmer playfully acknowledged his own arrogance in that regard and recalled a conversation with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, who pointedly asked, “Hans, what are you complaining about?”

Strong Ties, New Directions

Although Zimmer has chosen to step back from superhero films, his relationships with industry colleagues, particularly filmmaker Christopher Nolan, remain robust. He collaborated with Nolan on notable projects such as Inception, Interstellar, and Dunkirk, further solidifying their legendary partnership.

Furthermore, Zimmer expressed a lack of interest in contributing to Star Wars projects due to the need for reinvention, emphasizing his desire to explore fresh ideas and ventures.

His impressive body of work encompasses not only superhero films but also masterpieces like Dune, the Pirates of the Caribbean series, Gladiator, The Lion King, and Top Gun: Maverick, showcasing the diverse range of his musical talent.
