Warning: SPOILERS ahead for the series finale of What We Do in the Shadows!
The Emotional Finale of What We Do in the Shadows
In the final season of What We Do in the Shadows, actor Harvey Guillén, who plays Guillermo, reflects on the poignant conclusion of the vampire comedy series. The sixth season culminates in a heart-wrenching episode, where Guillermo grapples with his emotions as the documentary chronicling his life with the vampires comes to an end. Amidst this emotional upheaval, he fabricates a poignant goodbye, tucking Nandor (played by Kayvan Novak) into his coffin, a moment showcasing his deep connection to the characters and the situation.
The Impact of Filming the Last Scene
In an interview with ScreenRant, Guillén disclosed that the last scene was shot on the final day of filming, which intensified the emotions he experienced. He described the moment as a mixture of sadness and happiness, recognizing the significance of this goodbye after dedicating seven years to the project. Guillén believes the series culminated perfectly, allowing viewers to witness Guillermo’s emotional turmoil as he confronts his identity beyond being a vampire’s assistant. He shared:
It was [an emotional catharsis], because it was the last day of shooting the series that I’ve been working on for seven years, from pilot to the end. It was the last scene of the show, so it was kind of perfectly timed… It’s a blink of an eye for them, but for a human who… the clock is ticking, we’re not immortal… That all hit Guillermo at once, so it’s kind of a really sad moment. What is he if he’s not this vampire familiar, vampire bodyguard, vampire nightclub embezzler, Van Helsing?. .. You have to be happy with yourself and not try to be an accessory or an accommodation to someone else, or a bigger picture.
Guillermo’s Future: A New Adventure Awaits
An Open-Ended Journey
Guillén’s reflections suggest that while the series may have concluded, Guillermo’s story is far from over. In a surprising twist, Guillermo is invited back into Nandor’s coffin, where Nandor reveals an underground lair and proposes a new partnership to fight crime together. This comedic yet heartwarming concept presents a new chapter where Guillermo’s human skills complement Nandor’s supernatural abilities, hinting at a dynamic duo that could serve as the basis for a possible spinoff.

As the series skillfully navigated the blend of humor and heartfelt moments, the final episode retained these elements while emphasizing Guillermo’s emotional journey. Reviews indicate that the creators made a wise decision to conclude the narrative at this peak, rather than risking a decline. Nevertheless, the finale’s open-ended nature signifies that life’s adventures for these beloved characters will persist beyond the screen.
Our Perspective on Guillermo’s Post-Series Path
His New Adventure with Nandor
While the emotional weight of Guillermo’s farewell resonated deeply, it appears that his relationship with the vampires—especially Nandor—will evolve in exciting new ways. With Nandor’s desire to engage in crime-fighting, fans can anticipate a comedic exploration of their partnership. Whether or not What We Do in the Shadows develops this concept into a full-fledged spinoff remains uncertain, but the concluding narrative leaves audiences hopeful for future escapades.
