Gérard Depardieu Faces Sexual Assault Trial in Paris
The highly publicized sexual assault trial of renowned French actor Gérard Depardieu has commenced in Paris, with the actor personally attending the proceedings.
Two women, including a set decorator and an assistant director, have leveled allegations against the celebrated actor, known for iconic films such as Cyrano de Bergerac (1990), Green Card (1990), and The Last Metro (1981). The alleged incidents took place in 2021 during the shooting of the French feature film The Green Shutters.
In this case, the accusers assert that Depardieu committed sexual assault while on set. The actor has categorically denied all allegations against him. The Green Shutters, directed by Jean Becker, is inspired by Georges Simenon’s 1950 novel, featuring Depardieu as a once-great actor grappling with personal demons and a failing career.
Trial Details and Background
Monday’s trial marks a significant moment, as it is the first instance where Depardieu faces formal sexual assault charges. Over recent years, he has come under scrutiny for various allegations of inappropriate conduct, all of which he has firmly rejected.
Previously, the actor was expected to appear in court last October; however, the trial was postponed due to medical issues. These included complications related to quadruple coronary bypass surgery and diabetes. A court-appointed medical expert recently affirmed his fitness to stand trial, albeit with specific stipulations. These include limiting each hearing to six hours, providing breaks every three hours, and allowing private access to restrooms and snacks to help manage his blood sugar levels.
Additional Legal Challenges
Depardieu’s legal troubles extend beyond this trial. He is also contending with an official complaint from actress Charlotte Arnould, who has accused him of rape dating back to 2018. This case has been ongoing in the French legal system for nearly seven years. Furthermore, a separate assault case brought by actress Hélène Darras was dismissed last year, with French prosecutors citing the statute of limitations for the alleged assault that occurred in 2007 on the set of Disco.
Media Coverage and Public Reaction
The French media, which had previously been relatively reserved regarding the allegations, is now providing extensive coverage of the trial. Notably, Libération released a two-page exposé questioning the broader implications of this trial, pondering whether it is a case against a mere man, a societal symbol, or a ‘monster’ who has long evaded accountability. Outside the courtroom, feminist groups have gathered to voice their support for the alleged victims, chanting phrases such as “We believe the victims” and “You touch one? We all respond!”
If found guilty, Gérard Depardieu could face a sentence of up to five years in prison and a fine of €75,000 (approximately $81,000).
