Attention, devoted followers of Westeros! Renowned author George R.R. Martin has teased that something significant is forthcoming, set to unfold on April 8 or 9.
Martin, famed for his epic series A Song of Ice and Fire, which inspired the colossal TV hit Game of Thrones, is also known for his prequels like Fire and Blood. Fans have been eagerly awaiting the sixth book, The Winds of Winter, which remains unfinished and has developed into a legendary saga over the years. It has been over a decade since the release of A Dance with Dragons in 2011. Many anticipated that he’d complete The Winds of Winter prior to the airing of Season 6 in 2016, but circumstances shifted, leading to mixed reviews for later seasons of the series.
Exciting Announcement Scheduled for April 8 or 9
What Can We Expect?

Despite repeatedly affirming his commitment to finishing The Winds of Winter, Martin’s focus has shifted, as he undertakes various projects, including HBO’s House of the Dragon, AMC’s Dark Winds, and even contributing to the Elden Ring video game. Furthermore, he has hinted at new literary endeavors such as A Dream of Spring. Recently, on his Not A Blog platform, Martin dropped a hint about upcoming news for fans to anticipate.
He confirmed that a revelation is approaching on April 8 (or potentially April 9). However, he firmly dismissed any speculations surrounding the immediate release of The Winds of Winter.
No, I am not announcing the completion of THE WINDS OF WINTER, the sixth volume of A SONG OF ICE & FIRE. Please don’t start any rumors to that effect. I am so tired of having to issue denials every time some offhand comment of mine, most having nothing to do with WINDS, somehow convinces half the internet that the book is imminent. It’s not. No. (Maybe I need to stop making offhand comments). So calm down. (Until April 8, anyway. Then you can get excited all over again, but for an entirely different reason.)
In his blog, Martin also updated fans about ongoing projects in the realm of Westeros. The filming for Season 3 of House of the Dragon is currently underway in London and is anticipated to premiere in 2026. Additionally, HBO’s adaptation of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, based on the first Dunk & Egg novella, The Hedge Knight, is reported to be progressing well. Furthermore, a new stage play titled The Iron Throne, which focuses on the pivotal Tourney at Harrenhal, is also making strides.
With the anticipated surprise about The Winds of Winter ruled out, what might be on the verge of announcement? It seems unlikely that fans will be thrilled about Martin’s new medieval-themed cocktail bar in Santa Fe, known as “Milk of the Poppy,” or a prospective surprise for House of the Dragon Season 3.
One possibility could be news surrounding Aegon’s Conquest, a series charting the transformative beginning of Targaryen rule over Westeros, which is still awaiting HBO’s green light. Additionally, any developments regarding the reintroduction of direwolves into the Game of Thrones universe cannot be dismissed. And, just maybe, could A Dream of Spring be finished already?
