Former Harry Potter Star Offers Advice to HBO’s New Cast: ‘Don’t Let External Criticism Affect You’

Anticipation Builds for HBO’s Harry Potter Reboot

  • Fans are buzzing about the new adaptation of the Harry Potter saga.
  • Katie Leung shares insightful advice for the new cast members.
  • John Lithgow confirmed to portray Dumbledore, with other key roles nearly finalized.

The excitement surrounding HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter television series is palpable, marking the first time the beloved Wizarding World will be adapted into a long-form format. Speculations abound concerning potential changes to the storyline, new character introductions, and developments beyond the original text. One certainty remains: audiences worldwide are eagerly anticipating this new interpretation.

The Harry Potter franchise boasts unparalleled fame, having been transformed into blockbuster films, theme park experiences, and an array of merchandise. Given its monumental success, the actors tasked with breathing life into this revitalized version will undoubtedly face considerable pressure, especially as they are set to be compared to their film counterparts. This sentiment has been echoed by those who have previously participated in the franchise.

Katie Leung, renowned for her role as Cho Chang in the Harry Potter films, understands the weight of these expectations. First appearing in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, she still draws recognition from her performance, which enhances her credibility when advising newcomers. During a conversation with GamingBIBLE, Leung imparted some words of wisdom to the fresh cast.

She stated, “I remember feeling really scared because it’s going to be such a huge budgeted show, and there’s going to be so many people involved. I think it’s really important to remember to be true to how you want to play a character and not let outer voices get to you. You’ve been cast for a reason, for a very good reason. Just roll with it. Just have fun; I would say just have fun. Remember that there are going to be a lot of people but what matters most in the end is to be vulnerable and open to exploring.”

Currently, the only actor confirmed in HBO’s Harry Potter reboot is John Lithgow, who will portray the iconic Albus Dumbledore, Hogwarts’ headmaster. Lithgow has expressed his commitment to the role by immersing himself in the source material, reading the novels in preparation for filming, which is expected to commence in the summer of 2025 at Warner Bros’ Leavesden Studios in England—familiar territory for Leung, having filmed there for the original series.

While other casting confirmations remain pending, reports suggest that HBO has secured three substantial roles. Nick Frost is set to embody the beloved Hogwarts groundskeeper, Rubeus Hagrid; Janet McTeer is anticipated to play Professor Minerva McGonagall; and Paapa Essiedu is in talks to take on the challenging role of Severus Snape. Additionally, auditions have been conducted for the crucial ‘Golden Trio’ roles—Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley—but no announcements have been made regarding those castings yet.

The inaugural season of the Harry Potter series is projected to premiere in late 2026 or early 2027, with each installment of J.K. Rowling’s classic novels receiving its own dedicated season. This format grants the creative team an opportunity to explore character development and story arcs in greater depth, potentially allowing for scenes and nuances that didn’t make it into the films to be preserved. Fans are looking forward to a rendition that remains faithful to the rich source material they cherish.
