A Refresher for Fans

The Burning World

Set in a ravaged landscape known as the Tokyo Empire, the story unfolds in a post-apocalyptic scenario. Following an event referred to as “The Great Cataclysm,”humanity has been stricken by spontaneous combustion, leading many to perish in flames and subsequently become infernals. Individuals who exhibit resilience to fire, categorized as second and third generation, possess the unique ability to manipulate or generate flames. These exceptional individuals typically enlist in the Special Fire Force, a faction associated with The Holy Sol Temple, the Tokyo Empire’s primary religion. Their mission encompasses rescuing civilians from the menace of infernals and putting to rest those lost to the flames.
Pursuing His Past Embers

The main character, Kusakabe Shinra, bears the trauma of losing his mother and younger brother, Sho, in a fire he was unjustly accused of causing during childhood. As he delves into the incident’s backdrop, it comes to light that his mother turned infernal, leading to the catastrophic fire. Shinra’s third-generation powers were awakened by Sho’s Adola Burst, escalating the stakes of their family saga. After an emotionally charged reunion with his brother, Shinra faces heartache as Sho is compelled away, manipulated by Haumea, the Second Pillar. Meanwhile, Shinra and his ally, Arthur, diligently intensify their training to bolster their defenses against formidable adversaries.
The last season concluded with both protagonists experiencing “Press of Death”during their rigorous training under Benimaru, aiming for unprecedented strength. The final imagery—a moon reminiscent of a previous popular series by Atsushi Ohkubo, Soul Eater—left a tantalizing mystery for eager fans. The waiting period following such a cliffhanger has undoubtedly been a test of patience, but with this new season on the horizon, it’s time for the characters to prepare for what lies ahead.

The opening of season three revisits the foreboding moon, presiding over a tumultuous sea of infernals lamenting under the smiling visage of the Evangelist. Transitioning to a desolate locale, we find Haumea’s agonizing echoes intermingled with Charon’s unease. As they prepare for a meeting, she confidently declares their mission to reshape the Empire. Eventually, the familiar faces of Company 8 emerge, engaged in a fiery intense sparring session, showcasing their honed abilities. However, the absence of a key figure is conspicuous.
Captain Obi on Mission

Captain Akitaru Obi is seen at the Fire Defense Agency, briefing the Chief regarding the collaborative investigations undertaken alongside the 2nd and 4th companies, as well as Lieutenant Takigi Oze from the Imperial Army. He elaborates on their findings linked to the Great Cataclysm near the Spacial Tear and successfully neutralizing a cluster of Demonic Infernals nestled in remnants reminiscent of Amaterasu.
Obi reveals that Haijima Industries was cleared of any collusion with the White-Clad, explaining how Rekka Hoshimiya utilized an insect in the artificial manipulation of Nataku Son, a child with the Adola Burst. His report includes an account of their investigative journey into the Nether, unveiling the White-Clad’s strategy to obliterate the ground beneath Tokyo. Following this impactful briefing, the Chief commends Obi for galvanizing the Empire through the Fire Force’s efforts. However, their moment of validation is abruptly overshadowed when officers from the Tokyo Imperial Army arrive, ready to apprehend Obi amidst the ominous looming presence of the White-Clad.
Unexpected Betrayal

“Absolute correct judgment. Absolute Blind Devotion. Release beyond the bounds of human knowledge. Divine madness.”
-Haumea, The Second Pillar
The narrative shifts back to Company 8, where a sparring session between Shinra and Arthur ends in a tense stalemate. An urgent call interrupts their banter, signaling dire news. We cut to Captain Leonard Burns, Karim Flam, Onyango, and Huo Yan Li, who gather in The Curia. Here, Raffles underscores the critical need for unity within the Empire. The startling appearance of the White-Clad leaves the men in shock as Raffles emphasizes that their collaboration could usher in a new era for the Empire. Leonard, visibly troubled, seems primed for confrontation. Haumea manipulates the situation, unsettling Leonard by exposing his innermost thoughts, attempting to persuade him of their common goals. She presents his eye as evidence of his knowledge regarding the truth, dismissing Karim’s anxious claims of the White-Clad’s intended Cataclysm. According to her, their actions will merely lead to their ultimate aspiration: a world transformed into an eternal sun, akin to Sol. Her declarations elicit disbelief and resentment, yet in a shocking culmination, Leonard kneels before her.
Rescue Mission

In the 8th’s quarters, the team grapples with the unsettling news of Captain Obi’s detainment. With the current intel at hand, there is an impending threat that the military might come for Shinra next, recognizing his Adola Burst capabilities. Hinawa rejects Arthur’s proposal to trade Shinra for Obi, asserting his intent to make a personal, unsanctioned rescue attempt. Despite the potential ramifications of treason, he stresses that this mission is a personal endeavor, not representative of their squad. The others, undeterred and resolute, vehemently offer their support. Licht reminds them of the implications of opposing the Empire, but the courageous spirits of Shinra and Company 8 remain unwavering as they prepare for the journey ahead.
