Recently, a dance challenge called “choking choreography” (掐脖舞) became viral on the video platform Douyin, which is known to be the Chinese version of TikTok. The choreography was “improvised” and popularized by a male streamer, and is known to take inspiration from the sexual act of BDSM with moves like choking, slapping, and using a whip.
Despite the sexual connotations, however, many Chinese fans who entered fancalls with female K-pop idols are requesting the female idols to replicate this dance challenge.
please ask idols APPROPRIATE challenges. it does not mean its popular, its okay for them to do it. also, dont ever say its your own money, you can ask them whatever you want, these IDOLS are HUMAN TOO! thank god seulgi denied op’s request to do this. pic.twitter.com/Jj3OZI6xT3

So far, aespa’s Karina and Winter, alongside NMIXX and ITZY members, have been shown doing this dance to fans’ request. Red Velvet’s Seulgi was asked the same, but ended up refusing after watching the dance video.
The video of Seulgi turning down the request has since gone viral on the SNS platform X, drawing huge attention. So far, Seulgi is being praised for her polite refusal, as netizens express concerns about this dance challenge.
The question of whether fans are going too far in fancalls have also been raised following this sexual dance challenge situation.
