Fallout 4: Is It Worth Returning the Deathclaw Egg?

Fallout 4 is rich in side quests, offering a diverse array of challenges for the Sole Survivor while searching for Shaun. Among these, one of the most eerie and atmospheric quests can be discovered at Salem’s Museum of Witchcraft. Nestled in the northeastern area of the Commonwealth, the museum certainly lives up to its ominous reputation, shrouded in a spooky ambiance. However, visitors soon realize that an unsettling event has unfolded within its walls, prompting the Sole Survivor to make a troubling choice instead of enjoying a peaceful exploration.

Upon arrival, players will notice that the main entrance is barricaded, leading them to investigate the surroundings. A chilling discovery awaits as they encounter the body of Private Hart, a fallen Gunner mercenary. By listening to Hart’s holotape, players initiate the quest titled “The Devil’s Due.” A hatch grants entry to the museum, unveiling the horrific events that transpired amongst the Gunner forces. This quest exemplifies the eerie charm characteristic of Fallout 4, complete with well-timed scares that heighten tension during exploration.

As players delve deeper into the museum, it’s evident they are not alone. Companions like Danse or Piper will make comments about the strange noises emanating from above. The museum follows a straightforward path, allowing for thorough investigation of each room for hidden treasures, including valuable junk, a Grognak comic, and an overdue library book. The path eventually leads to the second floor, where the source of the unsettling sounds is revealed—a formidable deathclaw.

The variety of deathclaw encountered hinges on the player’s level; for instance, at level 24, a savage deathclaw is faced, while higher levels may introduce albino or chameleon variants. Although players can opt to sneak past the beast with sufficient Stealth, most will find it necessary to engage it in combat to progress further. These encounters can be precarious; the risk of being cornered during the fight is significant. Although there’s a missile launcher available near the deathclaw room, its lengthy reload time makes it less than ideal. Thus, stocking up on Stimpaks, ammunition, and bringing along a capable companion like Danse or Strong will bolster survivability in battle.

The pristine deathclaw egg is located beside Sergeant Lee’s body, along with a holotape providing context regarding the Gunners’ predicament. Lee mentions Wellingham, the robot bartender in Diamond City, as the client, offering the option to fulfill the Gunner’s contract. Upon returning, Wellingham will be found waiting outside the Colonial Taphouse, expressing frustration over the delayed delivery.

Initially, Wellingham will propose 200 caps for the egg. However, players have the opportunity to pass three Speech checks, potentially increasing the payout to 300, 400, or even 500 caps. Additionally, players receive Wellingham’s Recipe, which unlocks new culinary options, including the Deathclaw Wellingham and Tasty Deathclaw Omelette recipes. While this may prove beneficial in Survival mode, the rarity of deathclaw eggs makes it a less valuable return overall.

The alternative option involves navigating back to the location mentioned by Sergeant Lee, where the egg can be returned to its rightful place in the deathclaw nest. Players can travel to Parsons Creamery and head directly west or, if the Lynn Woods tower has been discovered, approach from the northwest. Upon nearing the nest,a friendly deathclaw will descend to observe the Sole Survivor’s actions.

While many companions will express distaste for returning the egg—except Piper and Nick Valentine—these two characters make for ideal companions for this part of the quest. To successfully complete the quest, players must place the egg in the nest, prompting the friendly deathclaw to approach and cover it with dirt. Following this, the Deathclaw Gauntlet, a melee weapon crafted from the remains of the creature, will be found on the ground next to the nest. Much like the museum, companions will react to this unexpected task, sharing comments about aiding the deathclaw or making hasty retreats.

Benefits of Returning the Egg

Enhanced Rewards & Positive Karma

For players looking to maximize their rewards in this Fallout 4 quest, there’s a strategy to gain both the benefits from Wellingham and the friendly deathclaw. As long as the Sole Survivor does not stray far from the egg or attempt to remove it before placing it in the nest, the non-hostile deathclaw remains unaffected. To harvest all available rewards, visitors should quickly retrieve the Deathclaw Gauntlet upon returning to the nest and then fast travel to Diamond City to claim their caps and recipe.

However, for those interested in a more immersive experience without exploiting the quest mechanics, returning the egg is often a better choice. Not only does this option feel morally correct, but it rewards players with a unique weapon that can be upgraded for greater damage. Though it can’t be wielded while in Power Armor, companions can utilize it. While the caps offered by Wellingham are beneficial, there are countless opportunities to earn caps throughout the game, making the Deathclaw Gauntlet a more special and practical asset.
