The Naruto series is renowned for its memorable jutsu, with the Rasengan and Chidori standing out as two of the most iconic. These techniques, associated with Naruto Uzumaki and Sasuke Uchiha respectively, not only symbolize their unique fighting styles but also their character journeys. Fans are often aware that while Naruto mastered the Rasengan under Jiraiya’s tutelage, Sasuke learned the Chidori from Kakashi. What many may not realize is the deep connection between these two jutsu; the Chidori is a direct evolution of the Rasengan, as clarified by series creator Masashi Kishimoto.
Minato’s Creation of the Rasengan

During the Third Great Ninja War, Minato Namikaze observed a Tailed Beast Ball, inspiring him to develop his own jutsu. After years of training with Jiraiya, he successfully created the Rasengan, intending it as a means for Kushina Uzumaki to defend herself. With firsthand knowledge of the brutal battles faced by Jinchuriki, Minato sought to impart this technique to ensure Kushina’s safety. Eventually, Kushina named the jutsu Rasengan.
The Jutsu I’m about to teach you is the legacy of the Fourth Hokage. It’s a very special Jutsu. — Jiraiya to Naruto.
While it remains uncertain if Kushina mastered the Rasengan, it is clear that Jiraiya subsequently taught it to Naruto, their son, thus making the Rasengan a cherished family legacy meant for protection.
Development of the Chidori
Chidori as a Rasengan Derivative

Contrasting the Rasengan, the Chidori, developed by Kakashi Hatake, serves as a piercing technique designed for high-speed attacks. While both jutsu exhibit remarkable power, their mechanics differ significantly. Kakashi, initially taught the Rasengan by Minato, ventured to enhance it by integrating elemental manipulation. However, his aspirations to create a “Lightning Release: Rasengan”fruitfully led to the accidental development of the Chidori.

This serendipitous creation highlights the unorthodox paths through which jutsu can evolve in the Naruto universe.

Years after introducing the Chidori, Kakashi Hatake improved upon this technique, resulting in the creation of Raikiri. Although both techniques share similarities, the Raikiri is notably more potent, classified as an S-Rank jutsu, while the Chidori is rated A-Rank. Kakashi’s enhancements are legendary, including the breathtaking ability to split a lightning bolt with the technique, solidifying Raikiri’s status as the “Lightning Cutter.”
