Renowned fantasy author George R.R. Martin has shared some exciting updates regarding HBO’s prequel series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Designed to adapt Martin’s well-loved Dunk and Egg books, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight is currently in post-production. This upcoming show aims to explore the narratives within Martin’s first novella, providing fans with fresh content to dive into after a lengthy hiatus following the conclusion of House of the Dragon‘s second season.

Recently, additional casting announcements have added to the anticipation. Notably, actors Ellie McHale-Roe and Carla Harrison-Hodge have been cast in the roles of Lia the Lovely and Beony, with rumors suggesting their characters may be sex workers. Eric Nolan, recognized for his role in The Witcher Season 3, is also joining the cast, though details regarding his character remain undisclosed. In terms of production, Martin acts as both creator and executive producer, partnering with Ira Parker and Ryan Condal, while the main characters include Peter Claffey as Ser Duncan the Tall and Dexter Sol Ansell portraying Egg, also known as Prince Aegon Targaryen, who serves as Duncan’s squire. Martin has consistently expressed his thoughts about the adaptation process, including details about the series’ episode count.

Martin’s Enthusiasm for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms

In a recent entry on his Not A Blog, Martin enthusiastically shared his impressions of the series: “I just watched it again last week, the latest cuts. It’s looking good, I think. I love it lots, but I’m not one to judge.” He highlighted that the spin-off is a priority over other adaptations currently in development, further stating the series will consist of six episodes, focusing on the first Dunk and Egg novella, The Hedge Knight.

Martin expressed his enthusiasm for seeing beloved characters come to life on screen, inspiring him to consider writing the next novella. Notably, some fans may be anxious, given that he has been working on The Winds of Winter for 14 years. He humorously acknowledged, “But of course, I can’t. Too many other things to do.”

While a precise airing date remains under wraps, HBO has designated a 2025 premiere for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight. Meanwhile, the eagerly awaited third season of House of the Dragon is not anticipated until summer 2026.
